Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Julie Hecht's stories first appeared inThe New Yorker, her unnamed photographer-narrator became an instant literary icon. Chronicles of her strategies for surviving civilization's decline -- herbal remedies, macrobiotics, a bit of Xanax -- have established her as one of the most captivating and eagerly read voices in modern literature. In this new collection of stories, Julie Hecht reclaims the darkly funny, existential territory for which she is known: "People say 'Good morning,' but don't believe them. It's just something to say." The uniquely eccentric narrator reappears inHappy Trails to Youand recounts her perplexed engagements with our society and the larger world -- whether she's attempting to withdraw money from a bank machine, worrying about Paul McCartney, or seeking a nonexistent place of calm on Nantucket, where nail guns and chain saws have replaced the sounds of birds singing.Appalled by life in our times, the narrator recounts innumerable artifacts from a now vanished America (civility, idealism, Elvis Presley, well-made appliances). She is also exquisitely attuned to the absurdities of our culture; her acute observations illuminate every subject, from the dangers of microwave ovens to the disappearing ozone layer. With deadpan wit, the author reveals the truths of a new century.Happy Trails to Youis a radically distinctive work of American fiction.

Book They Raised Me Up

Download or read book They Raised Me Up written by Carolyn Marie Wilkins and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the cocaine-fueled 1980s, Carolyn Wilkins left a disastrous marriage in Seattle and, hoping to make it in the music business, moved with her four-year-old daughter to a gritty working-class town on the edge of Boston. They Raised Me Up is the story of her battle to succeed in the world of jam sessions and jazz clubs—a man’s world where women were seen as either sex objects or doormats. To survive, she had to find a way to pay the bills, overcome a crippling case of stage fright, fend off a series of unsuitable men, and most important, find a reliable babysitter. Alternating with Carolyn’s story are the stories of her ancestors and mentors—five musically gifted women who struggled to realize their dreams at the turn of the twentieth century: Philippa Schuyler, whose efforts to “pass” for white inspired Carolyn to embrace her own black identity despite her “damn near white” appearance and biracial child; Marjory Jackson, the musician and single mother whose dark complexion and flamboyant lifestyle raised eyebrows among her contemporaries in the snobby, color-conscious world of the African American elite; Lilly Pruett, the daughter of an illiterate sharecropper whose stunning beauty might have been her only ticket out of the “Jim Crow” South; Ruth Lipscomb, the country girl who dreamed, against all odds, of becoming a concert pianist and realized her improbable ambition in 1941; Alberta Sweeney, who survived a devastating personal tragedy by relying on the musical talent and spiritual stamina she had acquired growing up in a rough-and-tumble Kansas mining town. They Raised Me Up interweaves memoir with family history to create an entertaining, informative, and engrossing read that will appeal to anyone with an interest in African American or women’s history or to readers simply looking for an intriguing story about music and family.

Book News from Wandaland

Download or read book News from Wandaland written by Kodell Parker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sending e-mails "You have News from Wandaland" to family and friends all across the states and to foreign countries is a hobby of Kodell Parker. He lives on a small cattle farm in north east Texas where cattle graze and coyotes sing at night. He often wrote about some amusing experience or happening. This became an interest after having retired from a major Oil Company in Alaska in the late '70s and settling down in Texas. Since there are days for no hay pitching, stalls to clean or fences to fix there was time for other satisfying and pleasurable activities to engage in. In the bunk house in the drawer of an old file cabinet which has seen its better days is a folder containing copies of many e-mails he has sent to a mail list over the past few years. He never kept any of the replies sent to him for reasons which have escaped his mind. Often, comments about a certain subject written about were received. It was not uncommon for someone to say "better layoff the juice" or "hide the jug in the barn." There was one who said that he was a "hoot" whatever that is. When the "mood "came upon him to tell folks hither and yonder how it is at Wandaland he just weighed in and commenced to write. His e-mails are styled as "News from Wandaland where the cows are always hungry and never give up their milk." More than once a person or two would say you should write a book about that. This is a collection of a few of his "News from Wandaland" just to show that he is not "loco," strange or a complete idiot as some people have commented. Perhaps you will say there is a wrangler "out there" sending e-mails all over the country and you should read one or two. The short stories are Reflection of rural life of the Parker family of fifteen siblings living in East Texas. The author penned the stories when he worked for a major oil company at Dead Horse, Alaska, in the 1970s when there were total dark days and "cabin fever" would set in. He truly hopes the e-mails and the short stories are pleasurable. Thank you for allowing them to be shared with you. Sincerely, Kodell Parker, head wrangler at Wandaland.
