Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handy Book of Fishery Management Most of these rules will appear so obvious that persons interested in fisheries will say they were aware Of all of them before, and that there is nothing in this book they did not already know. This is certainly true. The object of this book is not to give new facts or to start new theories, but to try to indicate the line of action that our present knowledge of the subject shows should be carried out. Book Ocean Fishery Management

Download or read book Ocean Fishery Management written by Adam A. Sokoloski and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ocean Fishery Management: Discussions and Research A licensing scheme of this nature would generate a certain amount of economic rent in the fishery. This economic rent could either be taxed away in the form of the license fee or could be allowed to accrue to the resources employed in the fishery. If the rent is taxed away, it should be used for administration of the management program and for research on and development of the resource itself. If the rent is allowed, either in total or in part, to accrue to the resources employed in the fishery, it would in turn be redistributed in the economy through taxes, and would ulti mately be built into the cost of production through the cost of fishing licenses. In either case, this should not be a serious deterrent to initiating a licensing system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisheries Management Plan: July, 1995 Summary Fishing is specifically authorized in the legislation establishing Buffalo National River. The need to prepare a Fishery Management Plan is driven by at least three main issues which stem from the recognition of recreational fishing as an activity: (1) The need for closer coordination, planning, and communication among agencies. (2) The perceived increase in recreational fishing pressure. (3) The lack of baseline data on fisheries. The resulting specific tasks identified in the plan will be incorporated in the parks Resources Management Plan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Routledge's Handbook of Fishing: With Illustrations The fins of fish consist of thin elastic membrane, supported by bony rays, and are denominated according to their position - dorsal on the back, pectoral on the breast, central near the vent, anal that between the vent and the tail, and caudal the tail fins. The dorsal and ventral fins appear to balance the fish, and the pectoral to push it forward; while the tail fins are the grand instruments of motion, and enable the creature to dart forward almost as rapidly as the bullet from a gun. Book Fishery Co Management

Download or read book Fishery Co Management written by Robert S. Pomeroy and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, there has been a shift in the governance and management of fisheries to a broaderapproach that recognizes the participation of fishers, local stewardship, and shared decision-making.Through this process, fishers are empowered to become active members of the management team, balancing rights and responsibilities, and working in partnership with government. This approach iscalled co-management.This handbook describes the process of community-based co-management from its beginning, throughimplementation, to turnover to the community. It provides ideas, methods, techniques, activities, checklists, examples, questions and indicators for the planning and implementing of a process of community-basedco-management. It focuses on small-scale fisheries (freshwater, floodplain, estuarine, or marine) indeveloping countries, but is also relevant to small-scale fisheries in developed countries and to themanagement of other coastal resources (such as coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass, and wetlands). Thishandbook will be of significant interest to resource managers, practitioners, academics and students ofsmall-scale fisheries.

Book The Sea Fisheries Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sea Fisheries Classic Reprint written by J. T. Jenkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea Fisheries The book finished, the more pleasant task remains, and that is to thank the numerous friends who have by their assistance and co-operation rendered its possible. Since an adequate knowledge of the sea fisheries can only be obtained in one place, and that is at sea, I have to thank many fishermen of all classes from the steam trawler skipper to the humble cockier for their invariable kindness in explaining the mystery of their craft. That I have avoided mistakes in comprehending their instruction is, I fear, not to be expected; but one hopes that the mistakes are neither numerous nor serious. I count it an honour that the greater number of my friends and acquaintances is to be found amongst the fishing population. Although the nature of my duties has frequently brought me into collision with what they have doubtless considered their rights and privileges, I am proud to think that I have never received aught but courtesy at their hands. No finer body of men is to be met with anywhere than British fishermen; this statement can be made with confidence by one who has spent much time with them, in fair weather and foul; and no one can have more hearty wishes for their prosperity than the author of this volume. To the Lancashire and Western Sea Fisheries Joint Committee, whose servant I have been for fifteen years, I am indebted for permission to make use of photographs originally taken to illustrate reports on the fisheries within their jurisdiction. I should like also to take the opportunity of thanking the Committee, both individually and collectively, for many acts of kindness and consideration, which have been far more numerous than I have deserved. To Dr. Wemyss Fulton, the Scientific Superintendent to the Scottish Fishery Board, I am indebted greatly, both for encouragement when the book was in the making and subsequently for advice and assistance, without which it is to be feared that errors and omissions would have been far more numerous than they are. At the same time it is proper to state that for the opinions in the book the author is solely responsible. Book On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations

Download or read book On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations written by Raymond J.H. Beverton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the fishes, a remarkably wide range of biological adaptations to diverse habitats has evolved. As well as living in the conventional habitats of lakes, ponds, rivers, rock pools and the open sea, fish have solved the problems of life in deserts, in the deep sea, in the cold antarctic, and in warm waters of high alkalinity or of low oxygen. Along with these adaptations, we find the most impressive specializations of morphology, physiology and behaviour. For example we can marvel at the high-speed swimming of the marlins, sailfish and warm-blooded tunas, air-breathing in catfish and lungfish, parental care in the mouth-brooding cichlids, and viviparity in many sharks and toothcarps. Moreover, fish are of considerable importance to the survival of the human species in the form of nutritious, delicious and diverse food. Rational exploitation and management of our global stocks of fishes must rely upon a detailed and precise insight of their biology. The Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series aims to present timely volumes reviewing important aspects of fish biology. Most volumes will be of interest to research workers in biology, zoology, ecology and physiology but an additional aim is for the books to be accessible to a wide spectrum of non-specialist readers ranging from undergraduates and postgraduates to those with an interest in industrial and commercial aspects of fish and fisheries.

Book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management

Download or read book Handbook of Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management written by R. Quentin Grafton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary work on marine conservation and fisheries management ever compiled. It is the first to bridge fisheries and marine conservation issues. Its innovative ideas, detailed case studies, and governance framework provide a global special perspective over time and treat problems in the high seas, community fisheries, industrial fishing, and the many interactions between use and non-use of the oceans. Its policy tools and ideas for overcoming the perennial problems of over fishing, habitat and biodiversity loss address the facts that many marine ecosystems are in decline and plagued by overexploitation due to unsustainable fishing practices. An outstanding feature of the book is the detailed case-studies on conservation practice and fisheries management from around the world. These case studies are combined with 'foundation' chapters that provide an overview of the state of the marine world and innovative and far reaching perspectives about how we can move forward to face present and future challenges. The contributors include the world's leading fisheries scientists, economists, and managers. Ecosystem and incentive-based approaches are described and complemented by tools for cooperative, participatory solutions. Unique themes treated: fisher behavior and incentives for management beyond rights-based approaches; a synthesis of proposed 'solutions'; a framework for understanding and overcoming the critical determinants of the decline in fisheries, degradation of marine ecosystems, and poor socio-economic performance of many fishing communities; models for innovative policy instruments; a plan of action and adoption pathways to promote sustainable fishing practices globally. Collectively, the handbook's many valuable contributions offer a way forward to both understanding and resolving the multifaceted problems facing the world's oceans.
