Book A Guide to Porcelain Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to Porcelain Painting Classic Reprint written by Sidney T. Whiteford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Porcelain Painting Whilst nearly every branch of Pictorial and Decorative art has been made the subject of numerous hand-books, it is believed that no manual of instructions in the art of paint ing on Pottery and Porcelain has hitherto appeared. Under its present facilitated conditions, the art, whether cultivated for pleasure or profit, will be found to afford a highly interesting occupation. The practice of Ceramic painting does not include the varied manipulative processes employed by artists who work upon canvas or paper. There is comparatively little to be taught, some acquaint ance with drawing and colouring being presupposed in the learner. Painting in enamel colour is more particularly recommended. The surface of the glazed ware is always practically identical in texture, and colours of every hue are available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Pottery AN art like pottery-making, which is nearly as old as the human race, is naturally approached with some degree of reverence. One thinks of its old masters in various lands and ages - how they were content to spend a lifetime in the study and practice of it. There is, however, another thought that comes to mind - that this art, like every other, had to have its beginning. Moreover, every potter, from the primitive man who first realised that clay which held water could be moulded into portable vessels for a like purpose, to the artist potter of to-day, has learned the first steps of the craft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pottery, Vol. 2: A Hand-Book of Practical Pottery for Art Teachers and Students; Decoration of Pottery This volume is intended to be supplementary to the earlier handbook issued in 1903. That volume dealt chie y with the making of shapes, while this is mainly concerned with decora tion. The illustrations show examples of good work in the different methods described, and among them are included photographs of a few decorators at work, to show convenient arrangements of fittings, etc. This book is primarily intended for beginners and students, and so may be found, in places, very elementary by those who know more about practical potting. It is mainly based upon teaching given by the author to practical Pottery Classes at the Royal College of Art, and other Schools of Arts and Crafts. In conclusion I again wish to express my thanks to the officials of the Victoria and Albert Museum for their help in arranging the objects for photo graphing, and for reliable measurements of the ware. I also wish especially to thank Mr. G. H. Palmer for his help in revising the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How remarkable changes in ancient Greek pottery reveal the transformation of classical Greek culture Why did soldiers stop fighting, athletes stop competing, and lovers stop having graphic sex in classical Greek art? The scenes depicted on Athenian pottery of the mid-fifth century BC are very different from those of the late sixth century. Did Greek potters have a different world to see—or did they come to see the world differently? In this lavishly illustrated and engagingly written book, Robin Osborne argues that these remarkable changes are the best evidence for the shifting nature of classical Greek culture. Osborne examines the thousands of surviving Athenian red-figure pots painted between 520 and 440 BC and describes the changing depictions of soldiers and athletes, drinking parties and religious occasions, sexual relations, and scenes of daily life. He shows that it was not changes in each activity that determined how the world was shown, but changes in values and aesthetics. By demonstrating that changes in artistic style involve choices about what aspects of the world we decide to represent as well as how to represent them, this book rewrites the history of Greek art. By showing that Greeks came to see the world differently over the span of less than a century, it reassesses the history of classical Greece and of Athenian democracy. And by questioning whether art reflects or produces social and political change, it provokes a fresh examination of the role of images in an ever-evolving world.
