Book Handbook of Commercial Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handbook of Commercial Geography Classic Reprint written by George Goudie Chisholm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Commercial Geography Preparations for a ninth edition were begun in 1913, and were nearly completed when the war broke out. This expression, the war, ' n'ow recurs again and again in the text, and one can only hope that the war referred to will prove to be such an unmistakable epoch in history as to leave no doubt as to what war is meant. When war was declared, both the publishers and I agreed that it would be altogether inopportune to publish a work of the scope of the present when the geography of almost the entire world was about to be upset. Publication was accordingly postponed till after the conclusion of the principal peace treaties. All the time, however, preparations for the new edition were going on, and the work now appears in a form more completely recast than any previous edition. The resetting of the entire book and the re numbering of the paragraphs have allowed of interpolations and rear rangements of matter on a much greater scale than ever before. The introductory matter of the fourth and eighth editions has been put in its proper place in the text, and subjects that seemed to me to require further elucidation have been dealt with at greater length. Such additions are scattered throughout the book, but the principal additions are under Climate (with new illustrative maps), Commercial and Industrial Towns, Coal, and The British Isles. It is this last section that has been most considerably extended, but not so much by the addition of new matter as by the incorporation of matter previously in one or other of the introductions. Notwithstanding the delay in publication, the work is still issued to an unsettled world, and one of which the settlement on a basis allowing of a new period of orderly evolution seems still remote. Comparisons under the head of value between pre-war and post-war conditions seem to me to be hardly ever possible, and for that reason no average values are given in this edition for periods subsequent to 1913, or the fiscal year 1913 - 14, where the fiscal does not correspond with the calendar year. International values have of course a meaning in individual transactions, but in present conditions I can attach no meaning to average values for any period comparable with those of pre-war periods, and therefore I do not choose to encumber my pages with data of which I cannot myself discern the use. It is doubtful, indeed, whether we shall ever be able to get such figures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Government and Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Government and Industry Classic Reprint written by C. Delisle Burns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government and Industry Although the principles considered are general in their application, they are studied mainly in reference to British experience, and therefore it should be recognized that their treatment here is not adequate, for it is an absurd provincialism to believe that the State is, in essence, the United Kingdom or that government is peculiarly British. Of course the various systems of government and the many different organizations of industry in other lands should be studied in order to establish a valid conception of the whole subject and for this reason alone it should be clear that the following is only a preliminary study. The excuse for not dealing in detail with non-british government and industry is in part personal ignorance, in part lack of evidence. Nevertheless, it does appear to be true that in the United Kingdom a characteristic and very important political and economic tendency is being developed more rapidly than elsewhere. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prices and Price Control in Great Britain and the United States During the World War The part of the work dealing with price control in the United Kingdom was finished in July, 1918; that which con siders prices and price regulation in the United States was begun in November, 1918, and concluded in June, 1919. Detailed discussions of such items as causes of the rise in prices, profiteering, industrial unrest, which are included in the treatment of price control in Great Britain, are omitted from the part considering price fixing in the United States; this was done chie y because such an inquiry, although it would have presented some additional illustrative material, would have involved too much repetition and lengthened considerably the study, without aiding either in the statement of the problems or in their elucidation. On the other hand, the consideration of the control of articles directly used for war purposes, such as iron and steel, copper, hides and leather, etc., which is omitted from the part dealing with Great Britain, is included in the investigation of price fixing in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hops Industry of the United Kingdom With a fairly high degree of mechanization and relatively large acreage per grower, the cost of production of hops is lower in England than on the continent but not as low as in America. This indicates a competitive advantage in favor of English over other European growers but in favor of American growers over English. Actually, because of the wide differences in types of hops produced and because of the controlled market, this is largely academic in terms of actual competition.
