Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook on the Diagnosis of Skin Diseases IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give a sketch of the symptomatology of skin diseases, or of the characteristics by which we recognize or dis tinguish one skin affection from another. With this object in view, I have in some instances confined my remarks chiefly to the differential diagnosis. For example, in such well-known maladies as Scabies and Eczema, I have not thought it necessary to give a very minute description of the disease, but have rather preferred to draw attention to the peculiarities and distinctive points which enable us to form a sound and rapid diagnosis. In dealing, however, with the rarer skin afiections, Jsuch as Lupus, Hydroa, Xan thoma, Purpura rheumatica, and Scleroderma, I have given a more detailed description of their symptoms, but have only touched on their etiology when it has had some important bearing on diagnosis.
