Download or read book Multilingual Learners and Academic Literacies written by Daniella Molle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting the discourse from a focus on academic language to the more dynamic but less researched construct of academic literacies, this volume addresses three key questions: • What constitutes academic literacy? • What does academic literacy development in adolescent multilingual students look like and how can this development be assessed? • What classroom contexts foster the development of academic literacies in multilingual adolescents? The contributing authors provide divergent definitions of academic literacies and use dissimilar theoretical and methodological approaches to study literacy development. Nevertheless, all chapters reflect a shared conceptual framework for examining academic literacies as situated, overlapping, meaning-making practices. This framework foregrounds students’ participation in valued disciplinary literacy practices. Emphasized in the new college and career readiness standards, the notion of disciplinary practices allows the contributing authors to bridge the language/content dichotomy, and take a more holistic as well as nuanced view of the demands that multilingual students face in general education classrooms. The volume also explores the implications of the emphasis on academic literacy practices for classroom instruction, research, and policy.

Download or read book Technical Assistance Manual for the California Model School Accountability Report Card written by Greg Geeting and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California State Proposition 98 requires the governing boards of California school districts to prepare and issue an annual School Accountability Report Card for each elementary and high school under their jurisdiction, beginning in the school year 1989-90. The report card must assess a minimum of 13 specified conditions. This manual provides technical assistance and examples of what report cards for individual schools might contain and how they might be developed. Guidelines for preparing a model report card are provided in the appendix to this manual. Although it is not limited to these areas, each report card must address the following school conditions: (1) student achievement in and progress toward meeting reading, writing, arithmetic, and other academic goals; (2) progress toward reducing dropout rates; (3) estimated expenditures per student and types of services funded; (4) progress toward reducing class sizes and teaching loads; (5) assignment of teachers outside their subject areas of competence; (6) quality and currency of textbooks and other instructional materials; (7) counseling and support personnel availability; (8) substitute teacher availability; (9) safety, cleanliness, and adequacy of school facilities; (10) adequacy of teacher evaluations and professional improvement opportunities; (11) classroom discipline and climate for learning; (12) teacher and staff training and curriculum improvement programs; and (13) quality of instruction and leadership. Download or read book The California CBO written by Irma Guzmán Wagner and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a survey designed to provide descriptions of chief business officials (CBOs): their personal characteristics, their career paths, and their preparation. All chief business officials in California K-12 school districts and in offices of county superintendents of schools received questionnaires regarding the CBO position; 662 responses were returned. With regard to personal characteristics, the findings revealed that the CBO in California school districts is a white male, around 45 to 50 years of age, with an expected retirement date of 1998. His yearly salary is about $50,000, and the position he holds is classified rather than certificated. Thirty-seven percent had prior outside experience in business, the military, or civil service. The CBO depended upon personal contacts for advancement. In relation to career paths and preparation, most CBOs had a master's degree. They concurred that budget preparation was the principal skill needed. The CBOs expressed satisfaction with their jobs but were most concerned about the need for a balance between required tasks and allocated resources. Another concern was that the position be advanced in terms of professional understanding and recognition. (JAM)
