Book A Consideration of the Acts of the General Conference of the United Brethren in Christ of 1885

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Consideration of the Acts of the General Conference of the United Brethren in Christ of 1885: The Work of the Commission The object in preparing these pages is to lay before the members of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ some facts respecting the form of church government in general, and of the United Brethren in particular. In all the ages past good and wise men have differed in their views. But all manly men, notwithstanding their differences, have maintained the true dignity of men. Good and wise men have differed on some of the great truths of the Bible; and more especially on questions of church polity. But why this difference of opinion? There is but one answer. No form of church government in detail is given in the Holy Scriptures. This is admitted by nearly all theologians and writers on church polity. General principles are given, but nothing more. The mode of governing the Church is left to its own judgment and the exigencies of time and place. No one, except through ignorance and sectarian bigotry, will claim as divine the details of any form of church polity. Constitutions, confessions of faith, and general rules, are all of human origin. If the wise Father had intended that the Church in all time, and in all places, should be governed by one particular form, he would have given it; but it is not given, and we, therefore, conclude that the details of all forms of church government are human. Good and wise men may adopt them, but that does not make them divine or infallible. The history of the United Brethren Church, like the history of every other aggressive and progressive church, is a history of changes in church rules. Book The United Brethren Endeavorer

Download or read book The United Brethren Endeavorer written by Otterbein T. Deever and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United Brethren Endeavorer: A Manual for United Brethren Christian Endeavor Workers The first manual for United Brethren Christian Endeavor workers entitled "Effective Endeavor" was written by Henry F. Shupe, D.D., editor of the Watchword, in 1915. The edition issued at that time has been exhausted. There seems to be need, as there is constant demand for such a manual. The conference on Young People's work held in Dayton, Ohio, October 17-20, 1922, attended by sixty leading representatives of the Young People's work of the denomination, expressed the conviction that a book of this character is essential to effective service by the workers among our young people. There being so many changes in plans of work since Effective Endeavor was written, they therefore requested the author of this volume to undertake the preparation of a new publication. Since the author also recognizes the need for a book of this kind, and since there was none available, and since his own heart experienced a real burden to carry a message of practical plans to our faithful workers, gladly, but hesitatingly, he undertook this heavy responsibility. The volume is sent forth with the earnest prayer that it may serve the purpose intended and be a real blessing to all who seek its help. Acknowledgment of valuable suggestions in the preparation of this book, obtained from the publications of the United Society of Christian Endeavor is gratefully given. The books especially helpful were "Officers' Handbook," by Amos R. Wells, "The Christian Endeavor Manual," by Francis E. Clark, "The New Junior Worker's Manual," by R. P. Anderson, and "Expert Endeavor," by Amos R. Wells. Material was also secured from Epworth League Methods by Dan Brummit. Editor H. F. Shupe gave helpful counsel and his book "Effective Endeavor" was used as a guide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Disciplines of the United Brethren in Christ

Download or read book Disciplines of the United Brethren in Christ written by A. W. Drury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disciplines of the United Brethren in Christ: In English, 1814 1841; In German, 1814 1819, 1841 As the present plan contemplates giving the Disciplines rather than a comment on their contents, after a few explanations included in this preface, the Disciplines will follow without note or comment. The Discipline occupying the first place in the following pages, namely, the manuscript Discipline assigned to 1814, preserved, no one knows how long, at the Publishing House, belongs, beyond all doubt, to the relative position indicated. The first germs of Discipline were taken from the rules adopted in 1785 for Otter bein's church in Baltimore. In allusion to the part performed by the Conference of 1789, Mr. Spayth uses the following language: The disciplinary rules which governed the Church from the first conference held in Baltimore, 1789, up to 1815, the reader will not be displeased to find here in chief, although noticed before, comprising the Confession of Faith, same as in Discipline, and the following rules. Especially with reference to the Confession Of Faith the above statement seems to be in the main correct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Annual and General Conferences of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ: 1800-1818 It seems proper to speak of the conference regularly organized in the year 1800 as the Original Conference for the period down to 1810, when the Miami Conference was formed, and then for the period following to designate it the Eastern Conference, which designation continues best to describe it till the division of the conference in 1830. The minutes of the conference first formed, though meager, are preserved unbroken down to and including the minutes of 1830. They are in German, and are recorded in a substantial record-book. The same book also contains in English the minutes of Virginia Conference from 1831 to 1837 inclusive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
