Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Poetics, for Students of English Verse Tms book is published in the belief that many teachers have felt the lack of a concise and systematic statement of the principles of poetry. Such text-books are taught with good result in German schools, and are intended to simplify, not to complicate, the study of literature. The greater part of the literature taught in our schools and colleges is in verse; but, in too many cases, the scholar studies poems without having acquired any definite and compact knowledge of the science of poetry. This Handbook of Poetics is meant to aid the teacher in laying so necessary a foundation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Introduction to Poetry

Download or read book An Introduction to Poetry written by Raymond Macdonald Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Not that my treatise on Poetry can make an Inspired Bard, any more than could the mere perusal of a few books make an individual of feeble mind a deep thinker; but it can, at least, do this - it can make him write correctly, if not forcibly; and a care ful study of the following pages, it is to be hoped, will enable all but the wilfully ignorant to judge of their own writings, and so to remodel and correct them as, at least, to render them free from those objections so offensive to a fine ear and a cultivated taste. Book A Poetry Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Poetry Primer Classic Reprint written by Gerald Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Poetry Primer This book is designed to help students in the early stages of their study, when poetry is like something behind locked doors for which they have no key. It is meant to be helpful particularly in introductory courses Where considerable poetry is read, and where, without devoting too much time to this, students are required to know something of the elements Of prosody. It is written simply, therefore, in the hope that once it is in the hands of students, they can teach themselves; it makes little effort to consider matters of chief interest to the advanced student and the critic; and it intro duces no innovations. It might be well if all the teachers and critics and writers of poetry would meet and settle once for all the ques tions of poetic and prosodic terminology, probably scrapping the present terminology, and even the present system of teaching prosody. But in view of the swiftness with which proponents and opponents of any small change rush to battle, it is unlikely that such a convention will be held this year; and until it is held, it seems best to employ the terms used for some hundreds of years Without material damage to the quality of English poetry or to its appreciation by those not writing it. Experience shows that many students need to know not only something about rhythm and metre and stanzas and feet, but how to read a poem intelligently. I have, therefore, added a very ele mentary section, included so far as I know in no handbook of this sort, on how to study the content of a poem. And I have tried to deal as fully as possible in so short a work with such troublesome forms as the sonnet, the ode, and free verse, in order to make these as clear as possible to students. For helpful comments on the manuscript, I am indebted to Professors Alma Blount, C. F. Harrold, and H. W. Reninger; and for permission to use some of their verse to illustrate a number of forms, to a number Of my former students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poet's Walk: An Introduction to English Poetry Whence then arises, and how is perfected the process of disillusion? How comes it that the pleasure, welcomed so freely and gladly in our infancy, too often sinks, as our faculties enlarge and our eyes grow clearer, into an odious and insipid task? It arises in the first place, no doubt, from the causes already mentioned; but it is also perhaps fostered by a certain narrowness and infelicity of method that one too often finds employed even by those who have the wit to see that poetry should be gently offered, not violently thrust upon the young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book for the Study of Poetry We have remarked that our purpose was not to offer in struction in verse-making. However, though not an end in itself, as an aid to the appreciation of poetic expression, verse-making possesses Ono little value and should hold its time-honored place in the study of poetry. As some help to this, a chapter of practical detail on poetic diction with abundant illustration has been added by way of appendix. Book The Poetry Handbook

Download or read book The Poetry Handbook written by John Lennard and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry Handbook is a lucid and entertaining guide to the poet's craft, and an invaluable introduction to practical criticism for students. Chapters on each element of poetry, from metre to gender, offer a wide-ranging general account, and end by looking at two or three poems from a small group (including works by Donne, Elizabeth Bishop, Geoffrey Hill, and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott), to build up sustained analytical readings.Thorough and compact, with notes and quotations supplemented by detailed reference to the Norton Anthology of Poetry and a companion website with texts, links, and further discussion, The Poetry Handbook is indispensable for all school and undergraduate students of English. A final chapter addresses examinations of all kinds, and sample essays by undergraduates are posted on the website. Critical and scholarly terms are italicised and clearly explained, both in the text and in acomplete glossary; the volume also includes suggestions for further reading. The first edition, widely praised by teachers and students, showed how the pleasures of poetry are heightened by rigorous understanding and made that understanding readily available. This second edition -- revised, expanded, updated, and supported by a new companion website - confirm The Poetry Handbook as the best guide to poetry available in English.

Book The Principles and Progress of English Poetry

Download or read book The Principles and Progress of English Poetry written by Charles Mills Gayley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Progress of English Poetry: With Representative Masterpieces and Notes Swinburne, and carried down to the present day, will, we are confident, be of rare and inspiring interest and value to teachers and pupils alike. In this latter effort our labors have been lightened by the generous cooperation of several of the most representative contemporary poets. We have, in general, adhered to the plan of the former book. The design is to provide within the covers of one volume what is usually set forth in three volumes: (1) an introduction to the Principles of Poetry; (2) a survey of the Progress of English Poetry by its periods, together with critical sketches of the lives and works of the poets chosen as representative; (3) as much as possible of the poetry commonly read in prep aration for entrance to American universities, and such other poems as are illustrative of successive literary periods and adapted to the requirements of an introductory course in Eng lish masterpieces; (4) such notes as will aid the pupil in his study of the poems and increase his ability to appreciate and understand poetry not thus annotated. For our former prefatory essay on the principles of poetry, intended not primarily for use in class but for teachers, to to be retailed to younger pupils as occasion offers and discre tion dictates, we have substituted here a distinctively ele mentary Introduction to the Study of Poetry. This Intro duction covers only such topics as are essential to the informa tion of high school pupils. It aims to present the material as briefly and simply as possible, but still with something of the detail befitting a subject of wide scope, something of the explanation required by pupils unfamiliar with the study, and something of the literary sympathy and delight that cannot be conveyed in a categorical and dry-as-dust statement. If the student is encouraged to make constant reference to the illustrative poems mentioned in the Introduction, he will learn to apply the principles and will derive keener enjoyment from poetry better understood. At the request of teachers the more comprehensive Principles of Poetry mentioned above will presently be republished in enlarged and independent form.
