Ona knowledge of Grecian Antiquities is derived principally from the writers of that nation. Homer, for instance, furnishes us with most of the information which we possess concerning the He roie ages; but after his days and those of Hesiod, the absence of contemporary notices for many centuries renders as almost entire l'y dependent on later writers for an account of the times which pre ceded them, as well as their own. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of Grecian Antiquities Tm: present Compendium of Grecian Antiquities has been anti: sly two-written, and contains nearly three times as much matter as the Epitome, under which title it first appeared. The author would therefore hope, that it will be found to be improved in some proportion, at least, to the labor and care which have been bestowed upon it. The marginal references, now first introduced, will answer the purpose of questions for examination, while the Index to all the Greek words and phrases will, he trusts, make his work more valuable as a book of reference. Book A Popular Handbook to the Greek and Roman Antiquities in the British Museum Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Popular Handbook to the Greek and Roman Antiquities in the British Museum Classic Reprint written by British Museum Department and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular Handbook to the Greek and Roman Antiquities in the British Museum There are so many points of view from which a collection of Antiquities can be approached, there are SO many and such excellent aids to the study of the British Museum already in existence, that it may be well to explain the limits and scope of this Popular Handbook. Some years ago I published a Popular Handbook to the National Gallery. It dealt mainly with the sentiment of the pictures. It brought together some of the best that had been known and felt about the painters and their works. Its endeavour was to interest the general. It found, and continues to find readers. In the British Museum there are exhibited treasures of a different kind, but it had long been my belief that they admitted of similar treat ment. The present volume is an attempt to apply to one branch of the Museum the method of popular compilation which has been found acceptable by visitors in the case of the National Gallery. Download or read book A Handbook of Grecian Antiquities written by E. F. Bojesen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Grecian Antiquities When I first became acquainted with Dr. Bojesen's Handbooks of Grecian and Roman Antiquities, they appeared to me admirably suited for their purpose; and my opinion was confirmed a few months ago by the terms of high praise which one of them has received in a principal Review of Germany. The reviewer, Dr. Osenbrüggen, himself the author of a treatise de Jure Belli et Pacis, says of the Roman Handbook: "Small as the compass of it is, we may confidently affirm that it is a great improvement [on all preceding works of the kind]. - We no longer meet with the wretched old method, in which subjects essentially distinct are heaped together, and connected subjects disconnected, but have a simple, systematic arrangement, by which the reader easily receives a clear representation of Roman life. We no longer stumble against countless errours in detail, which, though long ago assailed and extirpated by Niebuhr and others, have found their last place of refuge in our Handbooks. The recent investigations of philologists and jurists have been extensively but carefully and circumspectly used. The conciseness and precision which the author has every where prescribed to himself prevent the superficial observer from perceiving the essential superiority of the book to its predecessors, but whoever subjects it to a careful examination will discover this on every page. Book Handbook of the Cesnola Collection of Antiquities From Cyprus Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Cesnola Collection of Antiquities From Cyprus To the Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the writer of this Handbook owes a large debt of gratitude, for the privilege of study so prolonged and intimate. His thanks are due no less to the Director of the Museum and to members of the Staff in every degree, for assistance of many kinds, ungrudgingly given; for the long labour of cleaning and rearranging the objects; and for the preparation of text and illustrations for the printer. Above all, in the Assistant Curator of Classical Antiquities, Miss Gisela M. A. Richter, he has had a colleague whose knowledge, judgment, and resourcefulness have been invaluable. Besides the general super vision of work in New York, in the intervals between the writer's visits to the Museum, and the laborious verification of references and measurements, Miss Richter has read the whole Handbook both in manuscript and in proof; and has made many valuable criticisms and suggestions in detail. By a fortunate coincidence, her own work on the Museum's collection of Bronzes and Glass was going on side by side with the preparation of this Handbook, and in essentials the arrangement of the Glass is hers, while that of the Bronzes owes much to her intimate acquaintance with the material. Book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Coins Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Coins Classic Reprint written by G. F. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Coins The attempt has often been made to condense into a small volume all that is necessary for a beginner in numismatics or a young collector of coins. But success has been less frequent, because the knowledge of coins is essentially a knowledge of details, and small treatises are apt to be um readable when they contain too many references to particular coins, and unprofitably vague when such references are avoided. I cannot h0pe that I have passed safely between these two dangers; indeed, my desire has been to avoid the second at all risk of encountering the former. At the same time it may be said that this book is not meant for the collector who desires only to identify the coins which he happens to possess, while caring little for the wider problems of history, art, mythology, and religion, to which coins sometimes furnish the only key. It is meant chiefly as a guide to put students of antiquity in the way of bringing numismatics to bear on their difficulties. N o attempt, therefore, has been made to avoid controversy Where any profitable stimulus seems likely to be provided by the discussion of doubtful questions. The comparatively full references and the bibliography are also added with the aim of making the book an introduction to more advanced works, rather than a more or less self contained statement of the elements. From about the 9th to 5th centuries BCE, the population of Greece grew unprecedently large, expanding from about 800,000 people to as many as 13 million. About a quarter million of these lived in Athens. The average size of urban households during this period grew considerably, a fact that suggests that food was suddenly available in excesses sufficient to keep larger families healthy and alive much more effectively than just a millennium earlier. Bigger families meant bigger armies and larger communities that would eventually grow into the metropolises of Classical Greece. This incredible stretch of time is called Classical Antiquity; the age in which Western civilization first realized its potential and place in the world. The era brought on big changes for all the people of the Mediterranean. Thanks to new agricultural methods, seafaring technology, and trade, great civilizations sprang up around the sea, building large urban centers full of artists, merchants, political thinkers, scientists, and philosophers. As Greco-Roman culture grew, the relationships each city and realm had with one another also developed and changed. In Classical Antiquity: A Captivating Guide to Ancient Greece and Rome and How These Civilizations Influenced Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, you will discover topics such as A Blind Poet from Ionia Pythagoras Athens, Greece The Greek Pantheon The Expulsion of the Persians Slavery The Golden Age of Athens Pericles at War The Socratic Method Plato Alexander the Great The Hellenistic Period From Greece to Rome The Roman Republic The Borrowed Gods of Rome The Classical Romans The Gladiators Julius Caesar, Part 1 Julius Caesar, Part 2 he Roman Empire The City of Pompeii Antonine and Cyprian Plagues Britannia and Londinium Remnants of Classical Antiquity And much, much more!
