Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farm Woodlot: A Handbook of Forestry for the Farmer and the Student in Agriculture It is the purpose of this book to aid the farmer in the establishment, care, and utilization of such small patches or plantations of timber as may be maintained in connection with the farm. The actual operations and the information necessary to conduct them are described accurately, we hope, but in a brief and popular style. The history and significance of the forests are briefly sketched as a background for the more specific data which apply directly to the woodlot, but the complicated and technical problems which are encountered only in the management of large tracts of forest have been carefully avoided. It is hoped that the volume will prove of value to the woodlot owner as a handbook in the proper management of his tree crop, and as a textbook for the agricultural student, who should be familiar with the possibilities of all his farm lands. The authors are under obligation to the United States Forest Service for plates 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30, 33, 34, 36 to 54, and 56 to 62 inclusive. Book Forest Policy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Policy Classic Reprint written by C. A. Schenck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Policy No-where more than in the United States is all public policy meant to be dictated by the people. For the benefit of the people and for the benefit of American forestry, a handbook might come in good stead giving the principles and the effects of a truly American forest policy. The present treatise, the contents of which are tabulated on pages 8, 9 and 10, does not pretend to fill the place of a comprehensive handbook: It is intended, primarily, for the use of the students attending the Biltmore Forest School; it forms the last part of an encyclopedic textbook of forestry (comprising silviculture, utilization, finance, mensuration and working plans) written by the author since 1898 on behalf of the Biltmore Forest Sch-001. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Forestry, Vol. 1: The Forest Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of the first half of "A Primer of Forestry," and to recommend its publication as Bulletin No. 24, Part I, of this Division. The present part ("The Forest") deals with the units which compose the forest, with its character as an organic whole, and with its enemies. It may be said to sketch the foundation of the practice of forestry and of forest policy. Part II will be entitled "Practical Forestry," and will deal with the practice of forestry, with work in the woods, with the relations of the forest to the weather and the streams, and will conclude with a brief description of forestry at home and abroad. For many of the illustrations of Part I, I am indebted to the kindness of several gentlemen not connected with this Division. Book Forestry in New England

Download or read book Forestry in New England written by Ralph Chipman Hawley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry in New England: Revised Throughout America and especially in the eastern United States there has been a rapid awakening of interest in forestry during the past few years. The disappearance of old forests, together with increased prices of lumber, has made ready converts to the forestry propaganda of the federal and state governments; but up to the present time nearly the only available literature on the subject is in the form of government bulletins. There are, to be sure, a number of good books on the trees written from a botanical standpoint, and several books dealing with forestry in a general way, besides a very few advanced textbooks. There is now such widespread interest in the subject, that a book dealing with the specific forestry problems of New England will not only be of interest to the nature lover but of real assistance to the land owner who wishes to adopt approved methods of forest culture, or to the student of forestry. Books are legion dealing with specific agricultural problems, and it is intended that this work shall be for the woodland owner what these are for the agriculturist. Every year more people are moving from the cities and acquiring country places. Many owners of this class cannot afford their personal time for farm supervision, and, without this supervision of the owner, farming is apt to be too expensive. Forestry particularly appeals to this class of owners because it requires less frequent attention than any other land culture. It is gratifying to find that the farmers are taking up forestry in the same practical way in which they are accustomed to handle other problems, and the authors frequently have been asked by farmers to recommend some good book on forestry. Book What Is Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Forestry Classic Reprint written by B. E. Fernow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Forestry? Sir: The unusual interest shown in the subject-matter contained in the following pages, when presented in the form of public addresses delivered by me as your representative before various bodies (notably before the State Boards of Agriculture of Kansas and Nebraska and the Chamber of Commerce of Rochester, New York), makes it appear desirable to publish the same for a larger audience. At first sight it may be thought incongruous to present under one cover the two aspects of forestry, the reader from the treeless plains being seemingly not interested in the treatment of the forest cover in wooded country, and vice versa. But while on general principles it is desirable that all citizens should understand the forestry problem as it presents itself in the different parts of the country, the knowledge which is gained in the natural for est is an aid in forest-planting, and the principles which underlie forest planting are also to some extent of influence in forest management. Hence both aspects are best presented together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
