Book Brief Handbook of English Authors Classic Reprint

Download or read book Brief Handbook of English Authors Classic Reprint written by Oscar Fay Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Handbook of English Authors This brief handbook is intended simply for every-day use, when reference to larger works of the kind may not be convenient. Experience has proved that the small book which can be readily taken up is consulted far more frequently than the ponderous volume that requires great muscular exertion to lift. In the world of letters as in the world of society conventionality plays no unimportant part, as every student of literature knows. That there is such a thing as "conventional immortality" every biographical dictionary yields abundant evidence. Even so small a work as this must necessarily contain many names that have achieved this conventional immortality through the accident of circumstance. Some literary fames are among the legacies left by preceding centuries to the present one to account for and explain. And when all is said, "the iniquity of oblivion blindly scattereth her poppy and dealeth with the memory of men without distinction to merit of perpetuity." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of English Literature Each chapter marks a chronological advance on the preceding chapter, except in the last book. There, for reasons suggested in the text, the three chapters deal with three separate departments of the literature of a single period - prose, the novel, and poetry. The titles of the various books and chapters are in harmony With the pur pose to make the volume a discussion of literature and literary movements rather than of general English history. Various helps to more extended study are given in an Appendix, where they may be easily referred to in con nection with the treatment of each period, but where they will not interfere with the continuous reading of the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature This study of the great writers is concise enough to give readers ample time to fall in love with the treasures of English literature. It is better to read and enjoy one play or one poem than to read many books about the play or the poem. A taste for good books exalts the meaning of everyday events, and it gives courage in life's battle. Certainly literature is most practical. Book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Robert Huntington Fletcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. Book Longmans Handbook of English Literature

Download or read book Longmans Handbook of English Literature written by Robert McWilliam and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Longmans Handbook of English Literature: From 673 to the Present Time The present volume is the outcome of an attempt to place in the hands of pupil teachers and other young students a simple and interesting story of the great English writers. Some time ago, much ingenuity was exercised in making a selection of the best hundred books, and it was considered that for busy people such a number gave ample scope for reading. In somewhat similar fashion, we now make choice of about a hundred best English writers, and invite young students to confine themselves in the first instance to these. And as the hundred best books by their variety gave materials suited to varying moods and tastes, so our list of English writers is meant to give a picture of the progress of English literature from its first rude beginnings, through its times of alternate flourishing and languor, and to show its varying aims in poetry and philosophy and divinity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of English Literature This little book is not a mere abridgment of any History or Histories of the subject which the author has already written. He has endeavoured to utilise in it, not merely the experience thus gained, and the reading of more than half a century, but also the knowledge, of what is likely to be required by its possible users, furnished by practice long ago as a schoolmaster both in England and in Scotland, and more recently as a Professor of the matter and an Examiner in many different Universities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of English LiteratureThe present book is based upon a series of papers contributed some years ago to a popular periodical. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is hoped that these reference lists will be especially helpful to those who wish to make a fuller study of the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal.
