Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Ceramic Calculations: With Examples The following pages have been written primarily for the use of the classes in Pottery and Porcelain Manu facture, held under the direction of the Staffordshire Education Committee. Since the recasting of the syllabuses of the City and Guilds of London Institute for this subject a few years ago, when the application of mathematical and chemical methods to the con sideration of the problems presented for solution in the course of the manufacture of pottery was first introduced, a collection of methods and examples such as are included in this work has been sorely needed. The Object of the author has not been to write a text-book on pottery manufacture. Descriptions of processes and discussions of the practical requirements of bodies, glazes, etc., are entirely absent, except in so far as they are necessary to an understanding of the arithmetical methods under description. Hence, for example, there is no general dissertation on the subject of fritting, nor on the principles underlying the compounding of fritts. On these and similar points information must be sought in special works dealing with those subjects. While it is hoped this small work may be wel comed by the students in our technical schools, in so far as they are concerned with pottery (and glass) manufacture, it may prove of some slight value to the general public engaged in these industries. The ceramic industry has been modernizing continuously, by newer innovations in product design, quality etc. Glass is an inorganic product typically produced by melting a mixture of silica, soda and calcium compound with desired metallic oxides that serves as coloring agents. Indian glass industry will increase on the sidelines of real estate growth across retail, residential and office estate. Glass production involves the fusion of several inorganic substances. These various substances include products such as silica sand, soda ash, dolomite and limestone, representing together 99% of all the raw materials, excluding recycled glass. Glass-ceramics are mostly produced in two steps: First, a glass is formed by a glass-manufacturing process. The glass is cooled down and is then reheated in a second step. In this heat treatment the glass partly crystallizes. In most cases nucleation agents are added to the base composition of the glass-ceramic. These nucleation agents aid and control the crystallization process. Glass-ceramics are fine-grained polycrystalline materials formed when glasses of suitable compositions are heat treated and thus undergo controlled crystallization to the lower energy, crystalline state. It is important to emphasize a number of points in this statement on glass ceramics.Glass ceramics has helped the electronics industry build much smaller and highly efficient transistors, leading to advances in all types of devices.
