Download or read book Handbook of Pediatric Surgery written by Chandrasen K. Sinha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although pediatric surgery is a distinct and evolving specialty, it still remains an integral part of most general surgical and paediatric medical practice. Nevertheless, surgery in children does differ from adult practice in various fundamental ways, and there are key physiological and anatomical differences that constantly need underlining. Progress and improvement in outcome has also been rapid but it is sometimes difficult for practitioners to keep themselves up-to-date with the usual surgical or paediatric text books. This book will give a concise overview of all important topics and is designed to provide information in order to recognise the common surgical conditions; namely typical symptoms and signs, investigation and then treatment management. It will also provide an anatomical and physiological background to aid understanding, in addition to emphasising logical, and where possible, evidence-based practice by the use of flow charts, tables and algorithms. Authored by an international range of leading contributors, this is the first book of its kind to offer comprehensive coverage to this topic in a quick reference, pocket-book format.

Book The Appendix ECAB E Book

Download or read book The Appendix ECAB E Book written by Samiran Nundy and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appendix has historically been considered to be a vestigial organ without any known function. However, it often becomes inflamed, and appendicitis is a common cause of acute and chronic abdominal pain with appendectomy being one of the commonest operations performed by general surgeons. Like the tonsils, uterus, and gall bladder, it also carries the distinction of being an organ which is often removed for dubious indications. This tendency has been exacerbated by the widespread practice and popularity of laparoscopic surgery. The majority of this book naturally focuses on the problem of appendicitis and the various issues in its management. Many of the authors have also brought in their substantial personal experience which, though not necessarily based on scientific studies, is valuable in a given clinical situation. The two chapters on appendicular tumors come from experts who are considered leaders in this field and their message is that these tumors can be treated effectively if diagnosed early and managed appropriately. This issue has contributions from a wide variety of specialists including gastro surgeons, colorectal surgeons, surgical oncologists, laparoscopic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, and pathologists. The collection not only highlights what is a relatively ignored topic but also sounds a cautionary note against trivialization of appendicular disease and appendectomy.

Book excerpt: "[...]would have exceeded the supply of surgeons. Diseases of all kinds are very accommodating; as soon as a successful rival is well introduced they retire without the least show of jealousy, showing that they are not strangers to the highest ethics, their associations to the contrary notwithstanding. There are many well written articles on appendicitis, but I believe the monograph by A. J. Ochsner, M. D., is decidedly the best, and when I refer to the best professional ideas on etiology, pathology, symptomatology and treatment I have in mind the opinions set down by Ochsner, for he has taken more advanced grounds in the medical treatment of this disease than any other physician I know anything about in this or any other country. If his "A Handbook on Appendicitis" brought out in 1902, had come out three years before, I should give him credit for being the first man on record to proscribe the taking of food in appendicitis, but as my first written advice on the subject was in the July, 1900, number of A Stuffed Club, * two years before his book, I shall give myself the credit for being the first physician to announce to the world _the only correct plan of treating the disease and suggesting the probable cause _which the intervening time has proven to be correct The only reason I have for making this announcement is that in all probability no one else will ever do so, and, as it is just and right that I should have[...]."

Book Controversies in Pediatric Appendicitis

Download or read book Controversies in Pediatric Appendicitis written by Catherine J. Hunter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although appendicitis is the leading cause of an acute surgical abdomen in children, many areas of controversy exist in diagnosis and medical and surgical management of this condition. Written in a practical, easy-to-use format, Controversies in Pediatric Appendicitis provides a thorough overview of these debated issues, careful to include perspectives on every aspect of care. The book begins with an introductory framework that examines the history of pediatric appendicitis, the epidemiology of disease, defining a complicated diagnosis, the role and efficacy of laboratories in diagnosis, and use and overuse of radiographic imaging for appendicitis. Later chapters cover antibiotic selection, surgical approaches to appendicitis, non-operative management of acute and perforated appendicitis, discussion of potential complications, as well as appendicitis in special pediatric situations like malignancy and other instances of immune suppression. Each chapter follows a similar format, beginning with clinical vignettes and concluding with pearls and pitfalls to provide readers with necessary clinical grounding and context with which to examine each of these areas of current controversy. A unique, first-of-its-kind book, Controversies in Pediatric Appendicitis is an ideal resource for pediatric surgeons, interventional radiologists, emergency room specialists, and all providers and surgeons that care for children with appendicitis.
