Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook on Antiseptics The main object of this handbook is to give a concise account of the chief chemical antiseptics which have been found useful for surgical purposes during the present war. Some of the publications on this subject are not readily accessible to many who Wish to inform themselves as to cur rent European practice, and the requisite information has not yet, so far as we know, been collected into a form handy for reference. It appeared, therefore, that the present work might prove of use to surgeons and others in this country who are now taking up military duties connected with the care of the wounded. Book Antisepsis Disinfection and Sterilization

Download or read book Antisepsis Disinfection and Sterilization written by Gerald E. McDonnell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization: Types, Action, and Resistance, by Gerald E. McDonnell, is a detailed and accessible presentation of the current methods of microbial control. Each major category, such as physical disinfection methods, is given a chapter, in which theory, spectrum of activity, advantages, disadvantages, and modes of action of the methods are thoroughly and clearly presented. Sufficient background on the life cycles and general anatomy of microorganisms is provided so that the reader who is new to microbiology will better appreciate how physical and chemical biocides work their magic on microbes. Other topics in the book include: Evaluating the efficacy of chemical antiseptics and disinfectants, and of physical methods of microbial control and sterilization. Understanding how to choose the proper biocidal product and process for specific applications. Classic physical and chemical disinfection methods, such as heat, cold, non-ionizing radiation, acids, oxidizing agents, and metals. Newer chemical disinfectants, including, isothiazolones, micro-and nano-particles, and bacteriophages as control agents. Antisepsis of skin and wounds and the biocides that can be used as antiseptics. Classic methods of physical sterilization, such as, moist heat and dry heat sterilization, ionizing radiation, and filtration, along with newer methods, including, the use of plasma or pulsed light. Chemical sterilization methods that use ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, or a variety of other oxidizing agents. A detailed look at the modes of action of biocides in controlling microbial growth and disrupting microbial physiology. Mechanisms that microorganisms use to resist the effects of biocides. The second edition of Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization: Types, Action, and Resistance is well suited as a textbook and is outstanding as a reference book for facilities managers and application engineers in manufacturing plants, hospitals, and food production facilities. It is also essential for public health officials, healthcare professionals, and infection control practitioners.

Book Handbook of Biocide and Preservative Use

Download or read book Handbook of Biocide and Preservative Use written by H.W. Rossmoore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My professional interest in antimicrobial agents and contamination control goes back 50 years to my tour as a microbiologist in a field hospital in Europe during World War II. With no experience and relying solely on a military handbook, I prepared thermometer trays with jars of blue bichloride of mercury and pink isopropyl alcohol. A preliminary typhoid diagnosis of one of our cooks resulted in the need for lab testing. His stool specimen and its subsequent disposal was my problem. My handbook said bum it. So burn it T did, in a five-gallon can with gasoline. Flames shot up almost six feet, and my next mistake was to extinguish them with carbon tetrachloride. This resulted in the production of lethal phosgene gas. The hospital had a near disaster. I could say that at that moment I vowed to write a how-to book so that such stupidities could be avoided. Nevertheless, when I was offered the opportunity to edit this book I thought back on the need for a real, practical treatment of my subject. This book, then, is a practical handbook for technical service personnel and scientists who are not necessarily specialists in microbiology. It provides information on suitable antimicrobial agents appropriate to their particular problem-solving needs and information on the microbial groups contributing to the specific problem, their ecologies, and strategies for controlling their access to the area or material of interest.
