Download or read book A Handbook of Antique Prose Rhythm Vol 1 written by Albert Willem de Groot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Antique Prose-Rhythm, Vol. 1: History of Greek Prose-Metre: Demosthenes, Plato, Philo, Plutarch and Others; Bibliography, Curves, Index Of one thing I am firmly convinced, viz. That only with this method, that is either with mine or a similar one, at any rate with a method of comparison, reliable results can be obtained. I am also convinced that Zielinski quite wrongly looks upon his statistical basis as 'felsen fest', and that, if the science of antique prose-rhythm is to lay claim to this name, it will have to change the usual method of investigation altogether. Book The Paths of Greek

Download or read book The Paths of Greek written by Enzo Passa and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume proposes a multidisciplinary approach to the history of Ancient Greek. Each of its ten papers offers a methodological example of how the study of Greek can be greatly enhanced by a truly multidisciplinary perspective in which the analysis of language interacts with epigraphy, textual philology and comparative linguistics, yet without neglecting the role that linguistic features play in the texts in which they are used, and hence in the culture which produced both. The first four papers tackle epic language, addressing eccentric pronouns and formulas, the role and semantics of the middle perfect, and the development of hexameter poetry in the colonial West. The next two papers are devoted to lyric poetry and its linguistic influence in Greek literature and tackle fragments by Corinna and Epicharmus respectively. The remaining four contributions look into a variety of topics spanning from early Ionic prose to the diachronic development of the Greek lexicon and its reception in Byzantine lexicography. They all provide examples of how Greek literary language evolved across the centuries, how it was perceived by ancient scholars, and what contribution modern linguistic approaches can provide to our understanding of both these issues.

Book Plutarch and Rhetoric

Download or read book Plutarch and Rhetoric written by Theofanis Tsiampokalos and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental reappraisal of Plutarch’s attitude towards rhetoric. Plutarch was not only a skilled writer, but also lived during the Second Sophistic, a period of cultural renaissance. This book offers new insights into Plutarch’s seemingly moderate attitude towards rhetoric. The hypothesis explored in this study introduces, for the first time, the broader literary and cultural contexts that influenced and restricted the scope of Plutarch’s message. When these contexts are considered, a new perspective emerges that differs from that found in earlier studies. It paints a picture of a philosopher who may not regard rhetoric as a lesser means of persuasion, but who faces challenges in openly articulating this stance in his public discourse.
