Book Black s Guide to Cornwall Classic Reprint

Download or read book Black s Guide to Cornwall Classic Reprint written by A. R. Hope Moncrieff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black's Guide to Cornwall IN the present edition of our Guide to Cornwall greater importance has been given to the popular coast resorts, some of which are coming more and more into note both as summer and as winter havens. With these, as far as possible, we have connected the various points of interest most often visited on excursions from them, so that different sections will serve as small handbooks to Fowey, Falmouth, Penzance, the Lizard, the Land's End, Newquay, Tintagel, and other spots where strangers are most likely to take up their quarters. As usual, we have tried to make our pages both readable and practical, entering into the spirit of the scene without over-loading our descriptive outlines with too much detail, which, in the case of a longer stay at any place, could be sought in local guides and more elaborate works, duly referred to for the benefit of our readers. Our principle is that a guide-book for use by passing tourists may contain too many facts as well as too few, the latter fault, of course, the more unpardonable our aim has been to avoid either extreme, with regard for proper proportion and the needs of the kind of reader chiefly kept in view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornwall To the mind of the ordinary Briton there is a curious attraction in getting as far as you can a streak in mentality Which has accounted in no small degree for the world-wide Empire. In England you cannot in one direction get any farther than the extreme point of Cornwall. Owing to the geographical configuration of Cornwall, the idea is magnified very vigorously into a really gallant effort to get there, such as might be made by an individual stretching out not only to his full stride, but indulging in a good kick! We feel in very truth we have got there, on to the edge of something or somewhere. As Wilkie Collins expresses it, the Land's End is the sort of place where the last man in England would be most likely to be found waiting for death at the end of the world! Book Nooks Corners of Cornwall Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nooks Corners of Cornwall Classic Reprint written by Catharine Amy Dawson Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nooks Corners of Cornwall At first sight it seems incongruous to speak of the Nooks and Corners to be found in so rugged a land as Cornwall. The masses of rock at Tintagel, Tol-Pedn, and the Lizard, the sheer drop of the High Cliff and the Dodman, the moors, the cromlechs, and the granite tors, are so impressive that we are apt to overlook the fertile valleys that intersect the country, the coves, coombes, and "pills" in which the hillside vegetation is often semitropical, and where the houses are embowered in flowering shrubs till they look like Jacks-in-the-Green that have taken root. Nor do these picturesque villages, sheltered and fruitful, this magnificent coast scenery, these grey moors, comprise the whole of this half-smiling, half-frowning land. Here in out-of-the-way places are relics of forgotten creeds and peoples, earthworks, amphitheatres, castles, the caves of smugglers, and the subterranean hiding-places of neolithic man. There is so much to interest, so much to see - almost too much it would seem, certainly too much for any one holiday; but Cornwall is a place to go to again and again, to go to till it seems as your own land, and its people have forgiven you for being a "foreigner." This Cornish folk, clannish but kindly, has of late years been decreasing. Not only is there the competition of foreign tin, but the lodes being now deep the cost of home production has proportionately increased.
