Excerpt: ...pleading before parents realize the necessity or importance of treatment, and it is here that the tact and personality of the nurse play so large a part. The nurse must be a good judge of human nature to know just what arguments to bring forth. For instance, to know when to point out to the parent that the improvement in the physical health of the child will make for greater ability to earn his living later. The nurse who visits a home to advise medical care for a child is falling short of her highest possibilities if she confines her attention entirely to that child. There is usually a baby in the home, and every mother is made happy by a little attention shown to this, the most important member of the family; thus without seeming inquisitive, the nurse can learn about the baby's health, its food, whether it sleeps well, how it is dressed; and if these conditions are not favorable to the child's development, the mother may be told of the Infant Welfare Station in the neighborhood. The nurse might even suggest that the Infant Welfare nurse be invited to call and see the baby. It is also possible in these visits to advise the mother as to the children's diet, the importance of nourishing food and the dangers of beer, coffee, and tea, the need of fresh air in sleeping rooms, the importance of cleanliness both of person and clothing, and the treatment of pediculosis and other minor skin diseases. Foreign-born mothers often object to their daughters wearing glasses, fearing that it may interfere with their matrimonial prospects. These mothers should be told that wearing glasses during school life may obviate the necessity for wearing them later on. The nurse must be able to judge with a fair degree of accuracy, whether or not the parents can...

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Nursing for the Use of Training Schools, Families, and Private Students This book, first introduced to the public by my ever-to-be-remembered friend, Prof. Edward L. Youmans, to whose most kind encouragement and assistance it owed its existence, is now for the second time revised and brought up to date under the supervision of his niece, Dr. Alice C. Youmans. It follows the same practical lines as the earlier editions, and until something more comprehensive is offered, I trust will continue to be of use to nurses both amateur and professional. Primarily designed for the latter class, I assume that elementary acquaintance with anatomy and physiology which is now of course a fundamental part of their training. The fragments of these here introduced, serving for them merely the purpose of review, may perhaps render the context more intelligible to the untrained majority whom also I hope to help. To the whole nursing sisterhood, I present it, in memory of the days when I was one of them, adding a reminder that "they never are alone who are accompanied by noble thoughts." Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Anatomy for Nurses The pupil-nurse in a training-school has very few hours at command for the study of text-books, but it is hoped that she may find in this Anatomy for Nurses an aid to the acquirement of that knowledge of the human body which is essential to the full understanding of her important duties. In preparing a book of this kind, the inevitable difficulty of selection, when dealing with a subject of such magnitude, is at once manifest.
