Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How special education used disability labels to marginalize Black students in public schools The Unteachables examines the overrepresentation of Black students in special education over the course of the twentieth century. As African American children integrated predominantly white schools, many were disproportionately labeled educable mentally retarded (EMR), learning disabled (LD), and emotionally behavioral disordered (EBD). Keith A. Mayes charts the evolution of disability categories and how these labels kept Black learners segregated in American classrooms. The civil rights and the educational disability rights movements, Mayes shows, have both collaborated and worked at cross-purposes since the beginning of school desegregation. Disability rights advocates built upon the opportunity provided by the civil rights movement to make claims about student invisibility at the level of intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Although special education ostensibly included children from all racial groups, educational disability rights advocates focused on the needs of white disabled students, while school systems used disability discourses to malign and marginalize Black students. From the 1940s to the present, social science researchers, policymakers, school administrators, and teachers have each contributed to the overrepresentation of Black students in special education. Excavating the deep-seated racism embedded in both the public school system and public policy, The Unteachables explores the discriminatory labeling of Black students, and how it indelibly contributed to special education disproportionality, to student discipline and push-out practices, and to the school-to-prison pipeline effect.

Book Children and Learning Difficulties Thoroughly Revised Edition 2023

Download or read book Children and Learning Difficulties Thoroughly Revised Edition 2023 written by Onita Nakra and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written to enable educators and parents to understand the nature of learning disability so they in turn can transform the capabilities of their students. Many children have difficulties learning in school and college, but not all are learned disabled. A specific learning disability occurs when difficulty with reading, writing or mathematics actively interferes with the learning process. Most learning disabled individuals are bright, intelligent and creative, yet may struggle in reading, writing or arithmetic. This book discusses how to identify the exact nature of the learning disability, outlines procedures for assessment and diagnosis, and suggests methods that have proven to be effective. Practical guidelines and resources are available for teachers, educators and parents. Anyone working with a learning disabled individual will find this book an invaluable resource and tool. Children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities do become contributing adults, head corporations and institutions, and make remarkable achievements in diverse fields. The diagnosis of a learning disability is no longer a stigmatising label but a stamp that upholds the child’s uniqueness. Written in clear, simple language, the book is an absolute must for parents, educators and other concerned individuals who want to jumpstart their child’s educational future.

Book Learning and Attention Disorders

Download or read book Learning and Attention Disorders written by William Feldman and published by Key Porter. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respected pediatrician and author of the bestselling The 3am Handbook, Dr. William Feldman writes this accessible yet authoritative guide for parents who know or suspect that their child has a learning disability. In this book, parents get clear descriptions of the recognized learning disabilities. Dr. Feldman covers how LD assessments are conducted and what doctors learn from them. Once parents are given the background on learning disorders, Dr. Feldman provides an up-to-date discussion on treatment, including the pros and cons of currently popular prescribed drugs. A child with special needs must be considered as part of the family dynamic, and merely knowing the facts, while it is key to understanding your child, isn't enough to help your child thrive. To this end, Learning Disorders offers invaluable advice on how to help your child and family live with LD, day-to-day and for the promising future.

Book The Complete Handbook of Children s Reading Disorders

Download or read book The Complete Handbook of Children s Reading Disorders written by Hilde L. Mosse and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M.D. Hilde L. Mosse, head psychiatrist for the N.Y. City Board of Education, writes from her own highly successful experience in teaching 1000 psychologically disturbed & disabled children to read, write & spell English. Her clinical evaluation procedures detail precisely how children should be examined for cognitive subskills. The renowned Dr. William Cruickshank renamed the book for the present publisher to: YOU CAN PREVENT OR CORRECT LEARNING DISORDERS. His endorsement reads, "It is unusual that a doctor of medicine has become an authority on the theoretical & clinical aspects of reading. Dr. Mosse illustrates that authority extensively & intensively. Her original two volumes (now together in paperback) is a compendium of significant information. It indeed could & should serve as a text for educational courses for learning disability teachers as well as provide valuable insights for classroom teachers, parents, aides & others concerned with learning disorders. Here is a book by an author who knows her subject matter, who obviously knows disabled children & who understands appropriate intervention & prevention procedures. This book should be in every university, every library & in the office of every professor of education, every superintendent, principal & disability specialist."
