Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook English Composition The indications of a growing demand for more practical methods of instruction in English Composition are unmistakable. To meet this demand is the object of the present book. In pursuance of such an object I have consistently refrained from touching upon the theory of Rhetoric, or upon the relations of Rhetoric to Grammar, Logic, and Æsthetics, and have tried to state - in the plainest way possible - only those things which every educated person ought to know. In this Preface I take the liberty of calling attention to two general features. First, it has been my constant endeavor to make the book interesting and stimulating. Second, it has been no less my endeavor to make the book available both for school and for college. How far I may have succeeded, must be left to the reader's judgment. I do not believe that anything here treated, possibly the chapter on Argumentation excepted, is too difficult for the boy or girl of average ability; or, on the other hand, that any rules are here laid down which one would be tempted to discard in maturer years. After all, the doctrine which teaches from these pages is not of my invention; it is merely the formulated practice of the best writers, exemplified in the illustrative extracts. Book English Composition and Style

Download or read book English Composition and Style written by William T. Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition and Style: A Handbook for College Students A general discussion which, among other things, speaks of the purpose and the method of this book, will be found in the accompanying introduction. Since this is intended chiefly for teachers, it is separate from the rest of the book. The latter is for the student, working preferably under direction, and it contains accounts of the theory of writing and exercises for practice. The more important parts are Chapters V-VII, of Part I, Chapters II-IV of Part II, and Chapters II-V of Part III, largely because they give more opportunity for practice. But they cannot wholly be understood without the other chapters. Several citations, notably those on pages ii6-139, I have introduced without the usual form of reference, deeming it best for students to come to some opinion without knowing the authorship. My indebtedness to the many writers of rhetorics from the days of Aristotle to our own immediate year is manifest Many of these are specifically mentioned in foot-notes, but I should also like especially to name, as books that have been most useful to me, the late Adams Sherman Hill's The Principles of Rhetoric, Professor Barrett Wendell's English Com position, the late Hammond Lamont's English Composition, Professor George P.Baker's The Principles of Argumentation, and Professor Ashley H. Thomdike's The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of English Composition: A Compilation of Standard Rules and Usage The aim of this handbook is to present under one cover the main requisites of good English, with the hope that it will be found a convenient code for accurate expression. The book is intended as a companion to a pocket dictionary. It is in no way offered as a substitute for either grammar or rhetoric, but rather as a brief, compact book of reference. It is intended to include standard rules and usage, and a few fundamental processes, - all designed to secure accuracy and something of effectiveness in use of the essentials of English composition. The aim has been to keep statements and illustrations, notes and exceptions, compact and yet definite, clear, illuminating, and interesting. An attempt has been made to include rules that are often violated, that settle doubtful points, that provide for fine distinctions, that point out the minute details of the printed page, and that attract attention to the simplicity and eloquence of English speech.
