This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Precious Stones and Antique Gems I have been induced to compile, for the benefit of amateurs and collectors of antique gems, a concise account of precious stones and antique gems; those usually called hard or fine stones, and also of some other stones and substances which cannot be comprised under the head of precious stones, but are frequently used in jewellery, and for ornamental and glyptic purposes. In this compilation I have frequently adopted the words of the best authorities, Dana, Bristow, Mr. Maskelyne, and others. In the second part I have noticed the principal precious stones, and other substances employed for glyptic purposes, known to the ancients, and described by ancient writers, and have attempted an identification of them with those known to mineralogists of the present day, in which I am much indebted to the writings of Mr. King and Mr. Maskelyne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precious Stones: Considered in Their Scientific and Artistic Relations, With a Catalogue of the Townshend Collection Since 1882, when the Handbook of Precious Stones was published, the volume has been several times reprinted from stereotype plates. Occasionally a few alterations and corrections were made in the text, but no opportunity occurred to improve the arrangement of the work Or to add fresh material. The present issue, however, represents a thoroughly revised edition. A large number of paragraphs have been wholly rewritten, while so many additions have been made to the accounts given of the difierent kinds of precious stones and other beauti ful minerals that the 112 pages of the original handbook have been increased to 140. Among the minerals which have now received fuller treatment may be named - diamond, sapphire and ruby, and the diflerent varieties of garnet and of zircon. But readers who desire to make themselves more intimately acquainted with the optical properties, the crystal-forms and intimate structure, the modes of occurrence and formation and the chemical composition and constitution of precious stones, will find it necessary to turn to works in which full details of these subjects are given. I n this connection may be named the treatises of Dana, of Professor Lew-is of Cambridge, Professor M askelyne and Professor M iers, for in the pages of the present handbook only such scientific considerations find place as can be easily grasped, and which, at the same time, held) to explain the beauty of precious stones and aflord methods of identifying the difierent kinds. This has been done in the belief that the necessary information will thus be much more readily acquired by the busy gem merchant or jeweler than would have been the case had the material been arranged in the usual sys tematic order. The latter is of advantage for quick reference after the fundamentals of the subject have been mastered. It is hoped. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precious Stones in Nature, Art, and Literature It is not easy, nor, perhaps, desirable, to give a list of all the writers from whom assistance, either directly or indirectly, has been obtained, since they are scattered through various departments Of knowledge, but many of them have been referred to in the text, and if a thought has been borrowed without specifying the definite source whence it was taken, it has usually been because it could be traced to several authors, showing that either the idea was native to all, or that all had Obtained it from the same source. Book Guide Collection of Gemstones

Download or read book Guide Collection of Gemstones written by W. F. P. McLintock and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide Collection of Gemstones: Museum of Practical Geology The minerals in the Museum of Practical Geology are arranged for the most part according to their commercial applications and, in consequence, the ores, i.e., minerals used for the extraction of metals, are separated from the so-called non-metallic minerals or those which, in general, are not applied to such a purpose. This arrangement has, of course, no scientific basis and fails to bring out the relationships between the various species, but it possesses the advantage of showing in a compact and readily accessible way those minerals which concern commercial and mining men. The non-metallic minerals are arranged in cases, marked A - X. The term non-metallic is somewhat misleading, as nearly all the minerals to which it is applied contain a metal or metals. These, however, are usually the light metals, e.g., aluminium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, as distinguished from the heavy metals of commerce, such as copper, tin, silver, gold, lead, &c. Amongst the non-metallic minerals gemstones occupy an important place from the point of view of commercial and general interest. They have not been separated from the rest of the minerals of this class, and the visitor will find them distributed throughout the various divisions. The reason for this is that in the majority of cases gemstones show no natural relationships with one another, the only feature which unites them into a class being their suitability for purposes of adornment. This suitability depends mainly on beauty and durability, but all minerals possessing these qualifications would not be reckoned as gemstones by a dealer. Many stones possessing these qualities in a high degree have little or no value at the present time, for there is a wide distinction between a stone naturally fitted for the purposes of the jeweller, and one for which there is a demand. From the commercial point of view the really precious stones are diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and, perhaps, opal and turquois. (The pearl, although probably the most valuable gem at the present time, is excluded, as it can hardly be termed a mineral.) The demand for the first four of these is fairly constant and the value is always high for good specimens. The fashion of the moment dictates the value of the other minerals which legitimately claim a place amongst gemstones. At one time it may be tourmaline, at another, chrysolite, at another, cat's-eye, or aquamarine, or topaz, or zircon, which is in vogue; the favoured gem consequently rises in value until some new whim relegates it to comparative obscurity. To such stones the term "semi-precious" is sometimes applied. The element of rarity plays, perhaps, the most important part in determining the value of a gemstone and outweighs, by what often seems a disproportionate amount, considerations of beauty and of durability. Download or read book Gem Stones and Their Distinctive Characters Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Herbert Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gem-Stones and Their Distinctive Characters Eauty, durability, and rarity: such are the three cardinal Virtues of a perfect gem-stone. Stones lacking any Of them cannot aspire to a high place in the ranks Of precious stones, although it does not necessarily follow that they are of no use for ornamental purposes. The case of pearl, which, though not properly included among gem-stones, being directly produced by living agency, yet holds an honoured place in jewellery, constitutes to some extent an exception, since its incontestable beauty atones for its comparative want Of durability. Book Handbook of Engraved Gems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Handbook of Engraved Gems Classic Reprint written by C. W. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Engraved Gems My 'Antique Gems and Rings' is now out of print; and will not be republished. During the interval since its appearance, so much additional information has flowed in upon me, more particularly from the Oriental quarter, that I should not be satisfied with another edition of that work, unless the great stock of fresh materials which I have collected should be incorporated; and also large additions made - a long and laborious undertaking for which present circumstances have rendered me totally unfit. But as the Publishers are contemplating a fresh edition of my smaller Treatise upon the same subject, a way seems opened out to me of carrying knowledge forward (at least in some degree) towards the point at which I have myself arrived. The chief utility of a Treatise of this nature lies in its bringing under the eye of the student the largest possible number of examples that shall illustrate the rules laid down in the text, and for this purpose I have selected the most important gems from amongst those figured in the previous edition of the two books. Interspersed with these will be found newly executed engravings of curious and unpublished types, which recent discoveries have brought within my reach. These additions have afforded me an opportunity of leading the reader, with little trouble, into "fresh fields and pastures new." This plan, besides the being more simple and expeditious than that of blending the new matter with the original text, has the advantage of bringing it more prominently under the student's notice, because the "Description of the Plates" usually finds more readers than any other part of the volume. Of these new lights, the most novel, and to my mind the most interesting, are the series of Roman-British Signets, for what curious thoughts do they not stir up through their connexion with the earliest history of our country? and of such memorials the kindness of friends has enabled mo to exhibit a much larger array than I had hoped, on first attempting their collection for the present purpose. The Amethyst was the stone of temperance and sobriety, being said to restrain the wearer from strong drinks, and from indulging in too much sleep.
