Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Half Century With Juvenile Delinquents: Or the New York House of Refuge J ne'r fifty years ago, in our city, the Society for the Prevention of Pauperism, which finally was trans formed into The Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Delinquents, made its first report. Within this period the whole history of organized effort for the reformation of young criminals, and the rescue of young children from a life of crime, is included. With nearly all the move ments in this direction, both in this country and Europe, the New York House of Refuge, in which the investiga tions of the Society have been practically embodied, has been directly or indirectly connected. The best known and most honored names of the city have been associated with its establishment and progress, and it has enjoyed in their interest and efficient labors a warm and high place. But two of its original Managers are now living. The opportunity to collect personal and authentic statements in reference to its early history, out side of its documents, is nearly exhausted. The readings, from prominent scholarly journals, were written by juvenile justice experts and often have a policy orientation that will help address student interest in the "so what?" application of theory. This book was released on 2021-12-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. In June 1831 the New York Magdalen Society published its first annual report. The Society charged that widespread sexual deviation, primarily in the form of prostitution, existed in New York City. The Magdalen Report claimed that approximately ten thousand women earned their livings as public prostitutes, and another ten thousand were “private or part-time prostitutes.” The Magdalen Society’s establishment and the subsequent publication of the Magdalen Report marked the beginning of a crusade in New York City to curtail sexual deviation and this study looks at the changes and reforms that took place.

Book American Fatherhood

Download or read book American Fatherhood written by Jürgen Martschukat and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the surprising diversity of fathers and fatherhood throughout American history and society The nuclear family has been endlessly praised as the bedrock of American society, even though there has rarely been a time in history when a majority of Americans lived in such families. This book deconstructs the myth of the nuclear family by presenting the rich diversity of family lives in American history from the American Revolution to the twenty-first century. To tell this story, Jürgen Martschukat focuses on fathers and their relations to families and American society. Using biographical close-ups of twelve different characters, each embedded in historical context, American Fatherhood provides a much more realistic picture of how fatherhood has been performed within different kinds of families. Each protagonist covers a crucial period or event in American history, presents a different family constellation, and makes a different argument with regard to how American society is governed through the family.

Book A Pickpocket s Tale The Underworld of Nineteenth Century New York

Download or read book A Pickpocket s Tale The Underworld of Nineteenth Century New York written by Timothy J. Gilfoyle and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A true story more incredible than fiction." —Kevin Baker, author of Striver's Row In George Appo's world, child pickpockets swarmed the crowded streets, addicts drifted in furtive opium dens, and expert swindlers worked the lucrative green-goods game. On a good night Appo made as much as a skilled laborer made in a year. Bad nights left him with more than a dozen scars and over a decade in prisons from the Tombs and Sing Sing to the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he reunited with another inmate, his father. The child of Irish and Chinese immigrants, Appo grew up in the notorious Five Points and Chinatown neighborhoods. He rose as an exemplar of the "good fellow," a criminal who relied on wile, who followed a code of loyalty even in his world of deception. Here is the underworld of the New York that gave us Edith Wharton, Boss Tweed, Central Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
