Book Tools of American Mathematics Teaching 1800 2000

Download or read book Tools of American Mathematics Teaching 1800 2000 written by Peggy Aldrich Kidwell and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-08-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the blackboard to the graphing calculator, the tools developed to teach mathematics in America have a rich history shaped by educational reform, technological innovation, and spirited entrepreneurship. In Tools of American Mathematics Teaching, 1800–2000, Peggy Aldrich Kidwell, Amy Ackerberg-Hastings, and David Lindsay Roberts present the first systematic historical study of the objects used in the American mathematics classroom. They discuss broad tools of presentation and pedagogy (not only blackboards and textbooks, but early twentieth-century standardized tests, teaching machines, and the overhead projector), tools for calculation, and tools for representation and measurement. Engaging and accessible, this volume tells the stories of how specific objects such as protractors, geometric models, slide rules, electronic calculators, and computers came to be used in classrooms, and how some disappeared.

Book A History of Mathematics Education during the Twentieth Century

Download or read book A History of Mathematics Education during the Twentieth Century written by Angela Lynn Evans Walmsley and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Mathematics Education during the Twentieth Century describes the history of mathematics education in the United States with conceptual themes concerning philosophy, mathematics content, teacher education, pedagogy, and assessment. Each decade of the twentieth century is analyzed using historical documents, within the context of the aforementioned themes, to create a concise history of mathematical reform as it relates to history within the United States. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to which reform movements are similar and different throughout the century—depicting which aspects of reform can be seen again. Mathematics education tends to swing on a pendulum from "traditional education" including teacher-directed instruction with an emphasis on computation skills to "reform education," including student-directed instruction with an emphasis on problem solving. All decades are analyzed to see where they were on the pendulum and what aspects may have contributed to the current reform movements led by the Standards movement.

Book One Field Many Paths U S Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education

Download or read book One Field Many Paths U S Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education written by Robert E. Reys and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to focus specifically on doctoral programs in mathematics education. It reflects the proceedings of a National Conference on Doctoral Programs in Mathematics Education (Lake Ozark, MO) which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This conference was proceeded by a comprehensive survey of programs conducted over the preceding year. The meeting was designed to generate dialog regarding the nature of current doctoral programs in mathematics education, to discuss ways to strengthen such programs, and to detail suggestions and guidelines for faculty engaged in restructuring an existing program or in creating a new one.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of an International Conference held in Vancouver, B.C., August 1993, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the journal Mathematics of Computation. It consisted of a Symposium on Numerical Analysis and a Minisymposium of Computational Number Theory. This proceedings contains 14 invited papers, including two not presented at the conference--an historical essay on integer factorization, and a paper on componentwise perturbation bounds in linear algebra. The invited papers present surveys on the various subdisciplines covered by Mathematics of Computation, in a historical perspective and in a language accessible to a wide audience. The 46 contributed papers address contemporary specialized work. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Handbook on the History of Mathematics Education

Download or read book Handbook on the History of Mathematics Education written by Alexander Karp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive International Handbook on the History of Mathematics Education, covering a wide spectrum of epochs and civilizations, countries and cultures. Until now, much of the research into the rich and varied history of mathematics education has remained inaccessible to the vast majority of scholars, not least because it has been written in the language, and for readers, of an individual country. And yet a historical overview, however brief, has become an indispensable element of nearly every dissertation and scholarly article. This handbook provides, for the first time, a comprehensive and systematic aid for researchers around the world in finding the information they need about historical developments in mathematics education, not only in their own countries, but globally as well. Although written primarily for mathematics educators, this handbook will also be of interest to researchers of the history of education in general, as well as specialists in cultural and even social history.
