Book A Half Century of Minneapolis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Half Century of Minneapolis Classic Reprint written by Horace B. Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Half Century of Minneapolis The general plan of the book has been that of grouping events of common interest rather than the chronological listing of happenings without regard to their relations and significance. With this design in mind the first seven chapters and the last are devoted to sketching several not definitely limited periods in the city's history, while Chapters VIII to XXVIII, inclusive, take up separate phases of the life and activities of the city, each account being in a measure complete in itself. In this method of treating the history of Minneapolis, much in the way of anecdote and reminiscence of the pioneers - which would find a place in a more extended work - has been, of necessity, omitted. Many side lights, however, are thrown upon the story of the city in the biographical sketches of men who have had a part in its building. These brief sketches will give an insight into the character of the people of Minneapolis which, possibly, could be oh tained in no other way, and will give to outsiders an explanation of many things which may seem to them incredible. Book Minneapolis in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Minneapolis in the Twentieth Century written by Iric Nathanson and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 2010 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Minneapolis is considered one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. However, like most cities, Minneapolis has its own checkered history. Iric Nathanson shines a light in dark corners of the city's past, exploring corruption that existed between the police department and city hall, brutal suppression of Depression-era unions, and reports on anti-Semitism at midcentury. Still other subjects that on the surface seem disparaging offer the city's residents an opportunity to shine. Community leaders make a difference during the "long, hot summer" of 1967, when racial violence exploded across the country. Concerned neighbors guide transportation policy from more and bigger highways to forward-looking light rail transit. A forgotten riverfront is transformed into a magnet for people wishing to live and play at the site of the city's earliest successes. Nathanson skillfully tells these stories and more, always with an eye toward how noteworthy characters, plotlines, and scenes helped create the Minneapolis we know today.

Book History Lover s Guide to Minneapolis A

Download or read book History Lover s Guide to Minneapolis A written by Sherman Wick & Holly Day and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minneapolis began at the Falls of St. Anthony, the sole waterfall on the Mississippi River. The cataract, the great hydrological engine, propelled the city's economic growth and physical expansion, and two distinct municipal identities emerged. A city of seasons, Minneapolis celebrates winter flurries and chills with ice skating and hot chocolate at the annual Holidazzle Festival. In the sultry midsummer heat, the Aquatennial brings swimmers and boating enthusiasts to the Chain of Lakes and the river. Landmarks, too, define the topography-Spoonbridge and Cherry, the Stone Arch and Hennepin Avenue Bridges, the Foshay Tower and the IDS Center. Join local authors Sherman Wick and Holly Day on a trip beyond the typical guidebook as they explore the architecture, parks and historical figures of the Mill City.
