Book A Hairdresser s Revenge

Download or read book A Hairdresser s Revenge written by Nicholas Mancini and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, set in 1963, recounts the story of Blair Fusco, an aspiring eighteen-year-old who wishes to become a successful hairstylist, and prove wrong those who regard him as queer, particularly his father. Perceived to be homosexual, and ridiculed for his effeminate characteristics, Blair struggles to find his personal and professional identity. A first foiled romance with a lesbian and several equivocal relationships with mature women, together with his initiation into a group of local mobsters, transform Fusco into a shrewd operator. After many adventures and vicissitudes, he becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his client/partner Robin Maxwell and her maid, Anne. Since Blair is the only suspect, and the police are unable to find the culprit, he is compelled to fight for his innocence. The young hairdresser pins his hopes on a few strands of hair found in one of the corpse's hands, which he believes came from a wig, and should hold a clue as to who murdered Robin. If Blair Fusco wants to exonerate himself and resolve the murders, he must find the culprit himself, unless he's willing to spend the rest of his days cutting hair in a penitentiary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2021 PEN Translation Prize A Best Translation of the Year at World Literature Today That Hair is a family album of sorts that touches upon the universal subjects of racism, feminism, colonialism, immigration, identity and memory. “The story of my curly hair,” says Mila, the narrator of Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida’s autobiographically inspired tragicomedy, “intersects with the story of at least two countries and, by extension, the underlying story of the relations among several continents: a geopolitics.” Mila is the Luanda-born daughter of a black Angolan mother and a white Portuguese father. She arrives in Lisbon at the tender age of three, and feels like an outsider from the jump. Through the lens of young Mila’s indomitably curly hair, her story interweaves memories of childhood and adolescence, family lore spanning four generations, and present-day reflections on the internal and external tensions of a European and African identity. In layered and luscious prose, That Hair enriches and deepens a global conversation, challenging in necessary ways our understanding of racism, feminism, and the double inheritance of colonialism, not yet fifty years removed from Angola’s independence. It’s the story of coming of age as a black woman in a nation at the edge of Europe that is also rapidly changing, of being considered an outsider in one’s own country, and the impossibility of “returning” to a homeland one doesn’t in fact know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three novellas by the New York Times bestselling author, including the classic tale of brotherhood from the Montana plains through the horrors of WWI. Jim Harrison’s critically acclaimed novella “Legends of the Fall”—which was made into the film of the same name—is an epic tale of three brothers fighting for justice in a world gone mad. Moving from the expansive landscape of early twentieth-century Montana to the blood-drenched battlefields of World War I Europe, Harrison explores the desperate actions of which men are capable when their lives or aspirations are threatened. Also including the novellas “Revenge” and “The Man Who Gave Up His Name,” Legends of the Fall confirms Jim Harrison’s reputation as a writer who “stands high among the writers of his generation. This book is rich, alive, and shatteringly visceral. A triumph” (New Yorker). “I can’t begin to do justice to the nuances of character and honest complexities of plot in this work. The writing is precise and careful—and sings withal.” —Raymond Carver, Washington Post Book World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complicated Complicity is about the forms taken, motives and spectrum of actions of European collaboration with the Nazis. State authorities, local military organizations and individual players in different countries and areas including France, Scandinavia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, Italy, Portugal and the countries of the former Yugoslavia are discussed in the context of the history of World War II, the history of occupation and everyday life and as an essential influencing factor in the Holocaust. New forms of right-wing populism, nationalism and growing intolerance of Jewish fellow citizens and minorities have made such historically sensitive studies considerably more difficult in many countries today. In this time of increasing historical revisionism in Europe, such elucidating discourse is particularly relevant.
