Gustavo, who is raised by his Tata (grandfather) in a small village in New Mexico, loves to play the bongos. Everyone in the village knew that Gustavo was afraid of the wind and is the reason why they called him Gust. Each time the wind blew, the villagers could hear the sounds of the bongos until one destructive storm forced the village elders to make a rash decision that impacted Gust and his Tata from ever playing the bongos again. Download or read book The Wind written by Jeremy Bendik-Keymer and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Part primer, part parable, part elegy for the depth and decency we sacrifice daily to the order of self-possession, The Wind invites us to enjoy it inventively .... A philosopher coming up against the limits of philosophy's forms of communication ("Philosophy, without being in touch, is always abstract"), Bendik-Keymer courts a thoughtfulness in which wonder practically circumvents theory. Energized by "utopian anger," he invokes the clearing, shaking energies of wind against the violent social rigidities we accept as normal. The wind, impersonal, is the figure through which to keep the dynamic inter-personal in view. ... I admire this book's inventiveness, its willingness to break with discipline in pursuing a wider vision of accountability." (Sarah Gridley, author of "Weather Eye Open" and "Loom") A process begun in Pisa, Italy in April of 2016 during a workshop on political theory in the Anthropocene, The Wind An Unruly Living is a philosophical exercise (askêsis, translated, following Ignatius of Loyola, as "spiritual exercise"). In his exercise, Bendik-Keymer throws to the void: the ideology of self-ownership from a society of possession. By using the Stoic kanôn, the rule of living by phûsis, he follows an element. Unhappily for the Stoic and happily for us, the wind is unruly. A swerve of currents through a social fabric, it's full of holes, all holely. Stretch and stitch as you want, it might settle more shapely tattered into light, but it will never become whole. The wind's only holesome.

The stories in the anthology feature a broad forged of characters and locales, each exploring issues of affection, betrayal, identity, and the human situation. Download or read book Pascagoula Run and Other Stories written by Jeffery Hess and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amongst this assemblage are stories that have never been seen before, many of which have appeared in literary journals, magazines, or anthologies, and others that found their way into some of Hess’s novels. Crime stories, all, and most on the Noir side of the spectrum. The characters and their environs change, but the trouble never ends. They all bring it on themselves, but that doesn’t stop any of them in moments like that. If you know, you know. Even if you don’t, you’ll be riveted by this stellar lineup of heroes and heroines and the damage they inflict. Critical Acclaim for Pascagoula Run: “Miscreants and ne’er-do-wells abide front-and-center—Pascagoula Run and Other Stories is an intriguing collection of suspenseful short story gems, many of them weaved with Hess’s deliciously dark sense of character-based humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this potent craft cocktail of nineteen Florida-centric stories blended to savory and spicy perfection.” —John Shepphird, author of Bottom Feeders, The Shill Trilogy, and Deception Specialist “In this gritty, somewhat crazed collection of short stories Jeff Hess has fashioned a world both boisterous and despairing. These bold novelistic tales are constantly engaging and memorable. Better yet, they are cinematic and pure fun to read.” —Fred Leebron, author of Six Figures, Out West, Welcome to Christiania, and The News Said It Was

Download or read book The Protectors Other Stories written by Nasir Mahmood and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories takes its title from one of the stories contained in it: The Protectors. All stories are basically romantic in nature, but they are not simple love stories. Their themes have all the colours, and their myriad shades, to afford you a panoramic view of the world we live in. The first story, for example, is that of a boy whose rebellious nature, not accepting the norms of a corrupt society, struggles to achieve a job on the basis of his qualification, and not on the recommendation of a friend. Another story deals in defence of the motherland from the vicious attack of a rival force. Then there is a story which gives a graphic picture of a poverty-stricken housing scheme where women, forgetting about their self-respect, stoop so low as to adopt a life style, both execrable and pitiable but there are women and there are women! In brief, the book touches on unemployment, indignity of a religious family, and inheritance inciting to murder. A story each describes the horrendous custom of doing away with female foetuses, the ugly face of feudalism, and foundering efforts of a courtesan to escape to a righteous life. Last but not least is the story of educated youth, who for want of any reasonable job, resort to robbery. The book takes you along on a journey which unravels a picture of unspeakable misery some people are subjected to. One would feel the milk of human kindness is drying up fast! One could read these stories with a view to killing time, but if they pause and think well, that is exactly what these stories are aimed at.
