Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Young Gunner describes the history of the Royal Field Artillery in France and Flanders in the Great War, including the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The book is based on the letters and journals of Second Lieutenant Colin Hutchison who joined the army aged 19 just before the war started. He found himself in command of a single gun in battle in 1914, a section of guns in 1915, a battery of six guns in 1916, and a brigade of 24 guns by the end of the war. He tells the story of front line action in thirteen battles on the Western Front, including Mons 1914, Ypres 1915, The Somme 1916, Passchendaele 1917 and Ypres 1918. His personal stories are inspiring, but more importantly his letters and journals describe, in a consistent style, not only life on the front line with the artillery, but also the details of his tactical deployment in battle. David explains, from his perspective, why so many men died unnecessarily in that war, and why the changes in tactical thinking he saw as necessary to achieve success and to prevent casualties were so slow to be adopted. One cannot understand the battles of the First World War without understanding the artillery. This book, with copious factual footnotes and helpful maps, gives new insights into many of the battles, and also covers all aspects of the field artillery at war on the Western Front, with the final chapter drawing together the tactical developments year on year. The Young Gunner will appeal to readers of military history, and in particular to those interested in the stresses and experiences of any one of the 140,000 men who served in the Royal Field Artillery in the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year-by-year examination of key WWI battles and how the ongoing advances in artillery shaped strategy, tactics, and oprations; includes battlefield maps! World War I is often said to have been an artillery war, yet the decisive role artillery played in shaping military decisions—and therefor the war itself—has rarely been examined. Artillery in the Great War traces the development of this all-important technology, the differing approaches to its use, the many innovations it underwent on both sides, and how those approaches and innovations in turn effected key battles such as the Battle of the Somme. This highly readable and informative history is perfect for any reader interested in understanding the legacy of World War I, or the evolution of modern warfare.

Download or read book Million Dollar Barrage written by Justin G. Prince and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, field artillery was a small, separate, unsupported branch of the U.S. Army. By the end of World War I, it had become the “King of Battle,” a critical component of American military might. Million-Dollar Barrage tracks this transformation. Offering a detailed account of how American artillery crews trained, changed, adapted, and fought between 1907 and 1923, Justin G. Prince tells the story of the development of modern American field artillery—a tale stretching from the period when field artillery became an independent organization to when it became an equal branch of the U.S. Army. The field artillery entered the Great War as a relatively new branch. It separated from the Coast Artillery in 1907 and established a dedicated training school, the School of Fire at Fort Sill, in 1911. Prince describes the challenges this presented as issues of doctrine, technology, weapons development, and combat training intersected with the problems of a peacetime army with no good industrial base. His account, which draws on a wealth of sources, ranges from debates about U.S. artillery practices relative to those of Europe, to discussions of the training, equipping, and performance of the field artillery branch during the war. Prince follows the field artillery from its plunge into combat in April 1917 as an unprepared organization to its emergence that November as an effective fighting force, with the Meuse-Argonne Offensive proving the pivotal point in the branch’s fortunes. Million-Dollar Barrage provides an unprecedented analysis of the ascendance of field artillery as a key factor in the nation’s military dominance.

Book King of Battle Artillery in World War I

Download or read book King of Battle Artillery in World War I written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In King of Battle: Artillery in World War I, a distinguished array of authors examines the centrepiece of battle in the Great War: artillery. Going beyond the usual tables of calibres and ranges, the contributors consider the organization and technology of artillery, as well as present aspects of training, doctrine, and other national idiosyncrasies. Artillery dominated the battlefields of World War I, and forever changed the military doctrine of war. No nation that had participated in significant ground combat would blithely assume that morale could ever replace firepower. The essays included in this volume explain how twelve countries, including all the major combatants, handled artillery and how it affected the Great War. Contributors include Filippo Cappellano, Boyd Dastrup, Edward J. Erickson, Bruce Gudmundsson, James Lyon, Sanders Marble, Janice E. McKenney, Dmitre Minchev, Andrey Pavlov, Kaushik Roy, Cornel and Ioan Scafes, John Schindler, and David Zabecki.

Chronicling the evolution of fire direction and control from the muzzle loaded cannons of the Union and Confederacy to the shock and awe of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the book examines, in detail, the development of artillery equipment and procedures that brought the art of the artillerist into the modern age. Significant developments in field artillery gunnery, including the birth of indirect fire at the turn of the 20th century, the development of predicted fire techniques for artillery and machine guns during the Great War, the World War II era development of the Fire Direction Center, and the rise of automated computer technology are presented at a level of detail that will intrigue artillerymen and historians alike. A must read for the serious gunner or anyone interested in the art and science of artillery.

Book Gunner on the Somme

Book excerpt: Gunner of the Somme is a remarkable memoir detailing the life of a gunner on the Western Front as observed by a gentleman scientist who served in the ranks.William Price was a Cambridge botanist who worked at Kew Gardens but a speech impediment made him feel unable to serve as an officer. He enrolled in the ranks and left this incredible description of how the brigade operated, how men worked on the guns and his experiences as a gunner. His account runs from the outbreak of war until he was wounded in late 1917, and there is a moving postscript written in 1958 when he returned to the battlefields around Ypres. In addition to his descriptions of the fighting at the Somme and Passchendaele, he includes fine detail - such as food and swearing in the ranks - that is hard to find elsewhere.

Book A Field Battery in the Great War

Download or read book A Field Battery in the Great War written by C. A. Rose and published by Archive Media Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Many changes of battery positions were made, and we burrowed down into the ground, as the enemy's heavy pieces were out after our blood.' The artillery was the war winning element which shaped the reality of combat on the Western front from 1914-1918. However, there are surprisingly few surviving accounts by the men who served the guns. C. A. Rose saw service on both 18-pounder field guns and also the heavier howitzers which provided the devastating power which eventually broke the will of the German armies to continue to resist. Rose describes the fighting at the most important battles of the Great War including Ypres, Messines, the Somme and Cambrai. This book is now recognised as one of the most important primary source accounts of the day to day experiences of a British field battery in action during the Great War from 1915-1918. C. A. Rose has left us a vivid and detailed account of the fighting in France and the reality of the artillery at the front, fighting in this most terrible of wars. The artillery battle was always a fiercely fought contest as the batteries themselves were constantly hunted by enemy aircraft ever ready to bring down a torrent of counter-battery fire. The dangerous lives of the Forward Observation Officer and his team of signallers who operated in the front line trenches are highlighted in this detailed and highly readable memoir which was first published in 1919 under the Title 'Three Years In France With the Guns - Episodes in the Life of a Field Battery.'
