Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the National Parks of America The current admonition, "See America first," has awakened many good and patriotic Americans to the picturesqueness and historical interest of their own land. It has not, however, suggested the extent of the America that is to be "seen"; and it is well that this is not signified by its crafty wording, for the average traveler would be somewhat disheartened at the realization that to see his country exhaustively would preclude his ever finding time to cross the seas. Scenic America is represented largely in its national parks, of which there are eight principal ones in the United States alone, aggregating about 6,800 square miles. (This does not include the Grand Canyon, which is technically a forest reserve, but which, nevertheless, is included in this book.) To visit them all is to realize the boundless possibilities of this under-exploited country and to see America in its most typical phases. America's national parks are full of timeless marvels that still rejuvenate the soul: the world's largest trees in Sequoia; its most spectacular geothermal site in Yellowstone; the grandest canyon. Perhaps the movement's most eloquent description that is still resonates came from national parks advocate John Muir: 'Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity...' Fortunately for the nerve-shaken, over-civilized people of then and now, President Woodrow Wilson created the National Parks Service (NPS) on August 25, 1916, though the drive to protect some of America's most remarkable wild spaces, to be 'used and preserved for the benefit of mankind', began in the 1860s. From Acadia to Zion, this beautiful introduction to America's preserved natural treasures is packed with landscape photography, original wildlife illustrations, and practical information. You will surely be inspired to rediscover these incredible spaces and find out why they're worth celebrating and you'll have all the tools to plan the first of many exciting trips. This book is intended to be a practical introduction to each of America's 59 national parks, distilled by Lonely Planet's expert authors. We highlight the best activities and trails, explain how to get there and where to stay, show you the wildlife to watch out for, and suggest ideal itineraries. Whether you're lucky enough to have a park on your doorstep or need to travel further, we hope that the following pages inspire you both the iconic and lesser-known gems that make up the USA's diversely breathtaking expanses. Download or read book A Tour of America s National Parks Classic Reprint written by Henry Ottridge Reik and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tour of America's National Parks The purpose of this book is to attract a more wide-spread attention to the wonderful natural beauty of our own country; to point out the possibilities of a "Grand Tour," here at home, that shall embrace more of scenic beauty and more marvelous natural phenomena than was ever included in a "Grand Tour of Europe"; to make clear to those who have but a limited vacation period what is to be seen in the different Parks, and how best to see it. It is not a Guide Book in the ordinary sense, yet it is intended to serve as such; for it not only indicates the proper procedure for making the "Grand Tour," but presents specific information about the most important things to see and the order in which they should be seen in each individual Park. The United States of America possesses the most remarkable series of public play-grounds in all the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the National Parks N ow I fail to share with my advisers their poor Opinion of the taste, enterprise, and intelligence of the wide-awake American, but, for the sake of my message, I yield in some part to their warnings. Therefore I have so presented my material that the miscalled, and, I verily believe, badly slandered average reader, may have his popular book by omitting the note on the Appreciation of Scenery, and the several notes explanatory of scenery which are interpolated between groups of chapters. If it is true, as I have been told, that the average reader would omit these anyway, because it is his habit to omit prefaces and notes of every kind, then nothing has been lost. Book America s National Parks

Download or read book America s National Parks written by Don Compton and published by W.W. West Incorporated. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a coast to coast journey featuring 18 of our most visited national parks, six as stunning double page pop-ups: Everglades, Great Smoky Mountains, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Glacier and Yosemite national parks. Pop-up paper engineering is created by Bruce Foster, designer of 40 pop-up books, including the amazing Harry Potter pop-up book. The pop-up illustrations by Dave Ember are in the style of the WPA 1930s posters. 13 of these historic posters are faithfully reproduced in the book, courtesy of the Library of Congress. Fascinating park action springs to life in cleverly designed mini-booklet pops. See two bear cubs scrambling up a tree to safety, an alligator charging its prey, a dory boat crashing through the rapids of the Colorado River, a red jammer tour bus coming out of a mountain tunnel, Old Faithful Geyser erupting 13 inches above the page, and a mother Grizzly rising up to defend her cubs. The beauty of our national parks comes to life in these pages. You and your family will be inspired to visit our national parks.

  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book The National Parks written by Dayton Duncan and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The companion volume to the twelve-hour PBS series from the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Civil War, Baseball, and The War. America’s national parks spring from an idea as radical as the Declaration of Independence: that the nation’s most magnificent and sacred places should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. In this evocative and lavishly illustrated narrative, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan delve into the history of the park idea, from the first sighting by white men in 1851 of the valley that would become Yosemite and the creation of the world’s first national park at Yellowstone in 1872, through the most recent additions to a system that now encompasses nearly four hundred sites and 84 million acres. The authors recount the adventures, mythmaking, and intense political battles behind the evolution of the park system, and the enduring ideals that fostered its growth. They capture the importance and splendors of the individual parks: from Haleakala in Hawaii to Acadia in Maine, from Denali in Alaska to the Everglades in Florida, from Glacier in Montana to Big Bend in Texas. And they introduce us to a diverse cast of compelling characters—both unsung heroes and famous figures such as John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, and Ansel Adams—who have been transformed by these special places and committed themselves to saving them from destruction so that the rest of us could be transformed as well. The National Parks is a glorious celebration of an essential expression of American democracy.
