Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Institutions and Charities for the Blind in the United Kingdom: To Which Is Added Information Relating to the Blind as to Their Manufactures, Books, Types, Education, Appliances, Statistical Figures, &C., &C In 1870, Scotland on the average benefited 76 Blind in each Institution; during the last year, 98. The total number is 161 in resident Institutions, and 330 in workshops. In 1870 England averaged 43 for each Institution; during the last year, nearly 50. The total number is in the Institutions, and 782 in work shops. In Ireland, as far as we can judge, the average now is about the same as in 1870, namely, 60. In 187 0 in Scotland the subscriptions, donations, legacies, and income from endowments, amounted to 7,943l.-rather more than 20l. Per head for the number benefited. In the last year reported the amount is l4,021l. - nearly 29l. Per head. In England in 1870 the subscrip tions, donations, legacies, and income from endowments, amounted to 31,273l.-or about 21l. Per head for the number benefited; during the last year reported, 56,448l. - or about 32l. Per head. As to Ireland we can make no comparison. The number of Blind in resident Institutions in England and Scotland has been increased by 410. The number in workshops has been increased (including those attached to resident Institu tions) by 254. In England there are nearly 2 in resident Institutions to each' 1 in workshops. In Scotland there are 2 in workshops to each 1 in resident Institutions. Looking at the charities, we find that in England persons are receiving pensions, and 392 being benefited in other ways (not including home-teaching societies). The total amount received during the last year, reported by'charities, is 35,951l.1 - or Ill. Per head of those benefited. In Scotland we find no chari ties distinct from Institutions (other than home-teaching societies). It will thus be seen that out of the Blind in the United Kingdom (taking the numbers in Ireland as near as we can judge) there are able-bodied Blind being provided for in resident schools and workshops, and being assisted by the charities, some few of whom are most likely employed in the workshops. We thus have a total of or considerably under one-fourth of the Blind who are being dealt with. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Blindness and Writing written by Heather Tilley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative and important study, Heather Tilley examines the huge shifts that took place in the experience and conceptualisation of blindness during the nineteenth century, and demonstrates how new writing technologies for blind people had transformative effects on literary culture. Considering the ways in which visually-impaired people used textual means to shape their own identities, the book argues that blindness was also a significant trope through which writers reflected on the act of crafting literary form. Supported by an illuminating range of archival material (including unpublished letters from Wordsworth's circle, early ophthalmologic texts, embossed books, and autobiographies) this is a rich account of blind people's experience, and reveals the close, and often surprising personal engagement that canonical writers had with visual impairment. Drawing on the insights of disability studies and cultural phenomenology, Tilley highlights the importance of attending to embodied experience in the production and consumption of texts.
