Steve Trewhella and Julie Hatcher have spent hundreds of hours in British waters observing native seahorses, witnessing at first hand how they behave in the wild, and how they interact with the other plants and animals in their underwater realm. With stunning photography, In the Company of Seahorses paints a rich picture of a mysterious world amongst swaying seagrass and colourful seaweeds. The accompanying text is packed with personal anecdotes describing the authors’ journey of discovery, illustrating for the first time the secretive lives of these elusive animals in British waters. By sharing one couple’s passion for an entrancing ocean icon, this book aims to inspire, inform and create a better understanding of the seahorse and its often vulnerable habitats around the British coastline.

Download or read book Seahorses written by Sara Lourie and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible, authoritative look at seahorses, their evolution, biology, habitat, and behavior. Absolutely captivating creatures, seahorses seem like a product of myth and imagination rather than of nature. They are small, elusive, and are named for their heads, which are shaped like miniature ponies with tiny snouts. They swim slowly upright by rapidly fanning their delicate dorsal fin, coil their tails to anchor themselves in a drift, and spend days in a dancing courtship. Afterward, it is the male who carries the female’s eggs in his pouch and hatches the young. Seahorses are found worldwide, and they are highly sensitive to environmental destruction and disturbance, making them the flagship species for shallow-water habitat conservation. They are as ecologically important as they are beautiful. Seahorses celebrates the remarkable variety of seahorse species as well as their exquisiteness. Fifty-seven species, including seadragons and pipefish, are presented in lush, life-size photographs alongside descriptive drawings, and each entry includes detailed and up-to-date information on natural history and conservation. Sara Lourie, a foremost expert on seahorse taxonomy, presents captivating stories of species that range from less than an inch to over a foot in height, while highlighting recent discoveries and ecological concerns. Accessibly written, but comprehensive in scope, this book will be a stunning and invaluable reference on seahorse evolution, biology, habitat, and behavior. Masters of camouflage and rarely seen, seahorses continue to be a fascinating subject of active research. This visually rich and informative book is certain to become the authoritative guide to these charming and unusual wonders of the sea, beloved at aquariums the world over. Praise for Seahorses “This guide covers every one of the 42 known species of seahorses, plus 15 additional relatives, including the seadragon. In addition to beautiful color photographs of all but the rarest species, the descriptions nicely summarize what is known about the distribution, reproduction, and identifying characters of each. The really striking feature, however, is an elegantly simple one: inclusion of a life-sized shadow/silhouette of each species. It is rather astounding to see that some of the pygmy seahorses are literally no larger than the average housefly! . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice

This guide includes full species accounts for 37 shark, 9 batoid and 4 chimaera species selected as being the more difficult to identify and/or commonly caught. Each species is described, depicted with a colour illustration and photo, and key distinguishing features of similar-looking species occurring in the same area are highlighted allowing for easy and accurate identification in the field. Keys to the shark and batoid orders and families, together with keys to chimaera and skate genera are also provided. This guide is intended to help fishery workers collecting catch data in the field in the identification of the cartilaginous fish species they might encounter. It is conceived to be updatable, offering the possibility to add new species accounts as new species are described."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seahorses are tiny fishes that are named for the shape in their head, which looks as if the head of a tiny horse. There are at the least 50 species of seahorses. You'll discover seahorses in the international's tropical and temperate coastal waters, swimming upright amongst seaweed and other plants. Seahorses use their dorsal fins (again fins) to propel slowly forward. To pass up and down, seahorses alter the quantity of air of their swim bladders, that is an air pocket interior their bodies. Tiny, spiny plates cowl seahorses' bodies all the way right down to their curled, bendy tails. The tail can grasp objects, helpful whilst seahorses want to anchor themselves to plant life. A lady seahorse lays dozens, every so often masses, of eggs in a pouch on the male seahorse's abdomen. After seahorse moms make their eggs, they bypass them over to the men to hold till the young are released. When it's time to offer birth, the dad pumps water through the pouch, freeing hundreds of fry, or baby seahorses, in only some mins. Called a brood pouch, it resembles a kangaroo's pouch for wearing young. Seahorses' young hatch after as much as 45 days inside the brood pouch. The toddler seahorses, each about the scale of a jelly bean, locate different toddler seahorses and flow together in small groups, clinging to every other using their tails. Unlike kangaroos, toddler seahorses do not go back to the pouch. They must locate food and cover from predators as quickly as they're born.

Book Marine Ornamental Species Aquaculture

Download or read book Marine Ornamental Species Aquaculture written by Ricardo Calado and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global trade of aquatic organisms for home and public aquariums, along with associated equipment and accessories, has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Aquaculture of marine ornamental species, still in its infancy, is recognized as a viable alternative to wild collection as it can supplement or replace the supply of wild caught specimens and potentially help recover natural populations through restocking. This book collects into a single work the most up-to-date information currently available on the aquaculture of marine ornamental species. It includes the contributions of more than 50 leading scientists and experts on different topics relevant for the aquaculture of the most emblematic groups of organisms traded for reef aquariums. From clownfish, to angelfish, tangs and seahorses, as well as corals, anemones, shrimps, giant clams and several other reef organisms, all issues related with the husbandry, breeding, and trade are addressed, with explanatory schemes and illustrations being used to help in understanding the most complex topics addressed. Marine Ornamental Species Aquaculture is a key reference for scientists and academics in research institutes and universities, public and private aquaria, as well as for hobbyists. Entrepreneurs will also find this book an important resource, as the culture of marine ornamental species is analyzed from a business oriented perspective, highlighting the risks and opportunities of commercial scale aquaculture of marine ornamentals.

Book Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea North Sea and Baltic Sea

Download or read book Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea North Sea and Baltic Sea written by Henk J.L. Heessen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.
