Book Harmful Australian Marine Microalgae

Download or read book Harmful Australian Marine Microalgae written by Gustaaf M... Hallegraeff and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2024-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algal blooms have the potential to wipe out fish farms virtually overnight. Contamination of seafoods with algal toxins can poison human consumers of fish and shellfish. During the past two decades, globally there have been significant increases in economic loss and human health impact due to harmful algal blooms. Harmful Australian Marine Microalgae offers fish and shellfish farmers information on how to effectively identify and monitor for the presence of algal species and take the appropriate species-specific countermeasures. Species descriptions are accompanied by a summary of the known distribution of the alga, its toxicology and, where available, suggestions for countermeasures. The book includes line drawings, light micrographs and electron micrographs to aid identification, as well as references and resources for further information. This guide will be valuable to fisheries and public health officials as well as all those involved in environmental water quality assessment.

Book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes

Download or read book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes written by Samantha Capon and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation communities in Australia's riverine landscapes are ecologically, economically and culturally significant. They are also among the most threatened ecosystems on the continent and have been dramatically altered as a result of human activities and climate change. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes brings together, for the first time, the results of the substantial amount of research that has been conducted over the last few decades into the biology, ecology and management of these important plant communities in Australia. The book is divided into four sections. The first section provides context with respect to the spatial and temporal dimensions of riverine landscapes in Australia. The second section examines key groups of riverine plants, while the third section provides an overview of riverine vegetation in five major regions of Australia, including patterns, significant threats and management. The final section explores critical issues associated with the conservation and management of riverine plants and vegetation, including water management, salinity, fire and restoration. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes highlights the incredible diversity and dynamic nature of riverine vegetation across Australia, and will be an excellent reference for researchers, academics and environmental consultants.

Book Freshwater Cyanoprokaryota of North eastern Australia

Download or read book Freshwater Cyanoprokaryota of North eastern Australia written by Glenn McGregor and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanoprokaryotes (also known as cyanobacteria or blue-green algae) can form a significant component of benthic, periphytic and floating microphytic assemblages across a diverse range of habitats. They contribute to the productivity of aquatic ecosystems and, in some cases, provide the major carbon source that sustains aquatic food webs. Various members of the Oscillatoriales are known to have caused animal deaths and adversely affected human health. They are also recognised as being an important contributor to and consequence of ecosystem degradation. Their ubiquity in lakes, streams and rivers throughout much of the world, and their ability to form blooms or nuisance growths rapidly are of particular interest to scientists and water managers. Despite their importance, there are very few comprehensive regional accounts of cyanoprokaryote biodiversity in the scientific literature. This volume provides the first detailed account of the freshwater Oscillatoriales of north-eastern Australia. It includes keys, morphological and ecological data for 6 families, 27 genera and 122 species, and photomicrographs and original illustrations to enable the accurate identification of natural populations based on stable and recognisable characters observable with the aid of light microscopy. Distributional data are based on the extensive surveys carried out by the author at 253 localities near lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers in Queensland and the Northern Territory as well as a review of the Australian phycological literature. Three species are newly described from the genera Leptolyngbya and Trichocoleus.

Book Plankton

  • Author : Iain Suthers
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2019-04-01
  • ISBN : 1486308805
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Plankton written by Iain Suthers and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthy waterways and oceans are essential for our increasingly urbanised world. Yet monitoring water quality in aquatic environments is a challenge, as it varies from hour to hour due to stormwater and currents. Being at the base of the aquatic food web and present in huge numbers, plankton are strongly influenced by changes in environment and provide an indication of water quality integrated over days and weeks. Plankton are the aquatic version of a canary in a coal mine. They are also vital for our existence, providing not only food for fish, seabirds, seals and sharks, but producing oxygen, cycling nutrients, processing pollutants, and removing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. This Second Edition of Plankton is a fully updated introduction to the biology, ecology and identification of plankton and their use in monitoring water quality. It includes expanded, illustrated descriptions of all major groups of freshwater, coastal and marine phytoplankton and zooplankton and a new chapter on teaching science using plankton. Best practice methods for plankton sampling and monitoring programs are presented using case studies, along with explanations of how to analyse and interpret sampling data. Plankton is an invaluable reference for teachers and students, environmental managers, ecologists, estuary and catchment management committees, and coastal engineers.

Book A Guide to Cyanobacteria

  • Author : Mark A. Nienaber
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2018-06-29
  • ISBN : 0813175607

Download or read book A Guide to Cyanobacteria written by Mark A. Nienaber and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) and the toxins they can produce pose serious economic, environmental, and public health problems worldwide. Much of the scientific and public interest in these microorganisms arises from their tendency to undergo explosive population growth and form harmful blooms, which have inflicted damage in industries as diverse as health care, public utilities, agriculture, recreation, real estate, and commercial and sport fishing. Until now, water quality professionals and other individuals tasked with finding and eliminating cyanotoxins have lacked an accessible guide to these potentially deadly microorganisms. Written for nonspecialists in a clear and straightforward style, this guide will help students, landowners, and citizen scientists identify different kinds of cyanobacteria and understand their impact on waterways, from neighborhood lakes and farm ponds to major river systems. The central feature of the book is a detailed key that systematically walks the reader through each step of the identification process. This key is linked to an extensive set of photographs and a companion smartphone app to assist readers in confirming their findings. Authors Mark A. Nienaber and Miriam Steinitz-Kannan include an ample glossary to help newcomers to the subject get up to speed as well as an in-depth and current bibliography to aid advanced readers in further research. They also offer instructions on how to correctly collect and analyze cyanobacteria. Altogether, this accessible yet comprehensive resource makes important, complex material available to a wide range of professionals and laypeople engaged in combating harmful cyanotoxins.
