Book The Organization and Administration of Physical Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Organization and Administration of Physical Education Classic Reprint written by Jesse Feiring Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization and Administration of Physical Education The development of physical education in America has been desultory always and, at times, even aimless. The manual training movement was forgotten in the enthusiasm over Dio Lewis' New Gymnastics. Catharine Beecher's Calisthenics for women lasted long enough to develop a reaction towards other types of work. Delsarte had its short moment; now it is gone. Too often we have installed the work of physical education with a shout, we have supported it with cheers, and we have seen it dwindle and die without even a tear. It is a pleasure to record a different temper today. School people are serious in their consideration of the matter. Principals, superintendents, and presidents are making plans for modern physical education, after careful study of the needs of boys and girls and the opportunities that physical education can offer to help meet these needs. The old systems, the old traditions, so carefully nourished by certain normal schools and training centers, are being subjected to a criticism that will eventually relegate to the limbo of forgotten things, the unscientific, the unserviceable, and the unsound practice of our programs. School men and physical education experts are seeking guides and standards for the work and are unwilling to accept the aims, purposes, guides, and standards of any school of physical education unless they are based on scientific foundations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, opportunities for exercise and sports grew significantly for girls and women in the United States. Among the key figures who influenced this revolution were female physical educators. Drawing on extensive archival research, Active Bodies examines the ideas, experiences, and instructional programs of white and black female physical educators who taught in public schools and diverse colleges and universities, including coed and single-sex, public and private, and predominantly white and historically black institutions. Working primarily with female students, women physical educators had to consider what an active female could and should do in comparison to boys and men. Applying concepts of sex differences, they debated the implications of female anatomy, physiology, reproductive functions, and psychosocial traits for achieving gender parity in the gym. Teachers' interpretations were conditioned by the places where they worked, as well as developments in education, feminism, and the law, society's changing attitudes about gender, race, and sexuality, and scientific controversies over the nature and significance of sex differences. While deliberating fairness for their students, women physical educators also pursued equity for themselves, as their workplaces and nascent profession often marginalized female and minority personnel. Questions of difference and equity divided the field throughout the century; while some teachers favored moderate views and incremental change, others promoted justice for their students and themselves by exerting authority at their schools, critiquing traditional concepts of "difference," and devising innovative curricula. Exploring physical education within and beyond the gym, Active Bodies sheds new light on the enduring complexities of difference and equity in American culture.

Book School Program in Physical Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Program in Physical Education Classic Reprint written by Clark W. Hetherington and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Program in Physical Education The report of Clark W. Hetherington, herewith submitted, on a proposed "School Program in Physical Education" is very broad in its scope. Beginning with a concise review of the rise of physical education in the public schools, it proceeds to a destructive critical analysis of the attempts that have been made to adapt European methods of physical education to American schools, and thence it passes to a constructive scientific presentation of the problems, objectives, and principles involved in the organization of a school program. Perhaps the greatest contribution made by the author in this report is to be found in his treatment of the primary aims of physical education. He shows how the big-muscle activities must be organized as an essential and bulky phase of child life, and then how these big-muscle activities must be organized in such ways as to secure their inherent values for the development of the fundamental intellectual, emotional, nervous, and organic powers underlying efficiency in life. Mr. Hetherington has had much experience and much success both as a teacher and as a supervisor of physical education. His theories, therefore, have been submitted to the test of experiment in school work and on the playground. They are the conclusions derived from long observation and much experimentation as well as from thought and study. Book Training for Sports Classic Reprint

Download or read book Training for Sports Classic Reprint written by Walter Camp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Camp's 1921 Training for Sports was intended to be a guide for physical education teachers, coaches, and athletes on how best to prepare their bodies for physical activity. In this sense, it may be best viewed as a guidebook rather than a step by step instruction manual. The book is divided into chapters, which focus on general physical conditioning, mental conditioning, the importance of sleep and diet, as well as specific chapters on the popular sports of the day, such as football, baseball, and track and field. It goes without saying that exercise science has progressed immensely in the nearly one hundred years that have passed since the original publication of Training for Sports. Noserious coach, trainer, or physical educator would be advised to use this book as a reference today. Techniques for both general physical conditioning and sport specific movements have evolved significantly since 1921. Today's game of football is vastly different than that of 1921. The value of Camp's book is thus the historical snapshot it provides. In 1921, training for sports was as much a preparation for a potential war effort than it was for leisure. Camp acknowledges as much in the section on general physical conditioning, stating, "The word training essentially implies a preparation; whether it be for severe physical effort as any athletic competition or military service in time of war, or merely for the ordinary conduct of life." It is clear however that Camp was an expert on the subject matter at the time of writing, and surely would be today were he still alive. He demonstrates remarkable understanding of practices that would come to be known as periodization and specialization, and discourages trainers from promoting a single-sport approach too early in a young athlete's life. Many coaches today would be wise to heed his advice. Training for Sports is recommended for anybody curious about the history of physical conditioning, particularly in the period of this book's initial publication.
