Book excerpt: Few capitals in the world are blessed with such rich and varied bird-life as Delhi. While these avian visitors and residents have always fascinated the people of this city, it is during the past few years that birdwatching has become a popular hobby among the young and old alike. In this book, the author profiles over 150 species of birds, inviting readers from all walks of life to join him in uncovering some of the city's most precious avian wonders-be it birds that visit your garden, or those you see in the city's parks and woodlands; the huge rafts of wildfowl and other water-birds on the Jamuna and nearby water-bodies, or the mysterious flocks that arrive and depart during the year. Also of use to those interested is information on what each of these birds looks like, where and when they can be found, what they eat, whether or when they breed or visit Delhi, and more. The book also introduces readers to various birding areas in and around Delhi, and highlights the bird life found there. Familiar areas include the Yamuna, Okhla, Tughlaquabad, the Ridge, the Asola Sanctuary, Sultanpur National Park, Badhkal Lake, as well as some of Delhi's parks and green area: Lodhi Garens, Buddha Jayanti Park, Deer Park, Qudsia Gardens, and the National Zoological Park, to name a few. The 50 color plates in the text comprise photographs of birds encountered by the author in the course of his many birdwatching expeditions. Book The Painted Stork

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. J. Urfi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-07-15
  • ISBN : 1441984682
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Painted Stork written by A. J. Urfi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will cover the entire range of the Painted Stork--beyond its stronghold in India and Sri Lanka to other countries--E Asia as well. For the sake of comparison, relevant information will be included about the other species of storks--both solitary as well as colonial, of Asia, as well as those in other parts of the world. Certainly plenty of references will be made about the work done on the American Wood Stork. Studies are underway in order to better understand the role of the monsoon rains on the nesting pattern of Painted Stork, besides attempting a review of the global status of the species. The former is likely to be of interest in augmenting our understanding about how global climate change is going to affect birds across India and the second is likely to raise interesting points about the distribution of species and their ranges. Both these studies will be carried through 2009 and should hopefully be included in the proposed book. Naturally, the focused interest in field research on the Painted Stork has resulted in accumulation of considerable information on this particular species, which is beyond the information contained on some standard Indian and international works and ornithological texts. The author hopes to include the entire spread of information of this species--from its systematics, evolution, distribution, ecology to its role in human culture as well as its association with mythologies. In other words, topics have not been restricted to the areas of the author’s research but have spilled over into areas of anthropology, ecology, conservation, etc.
