In 2008, I was working in India with one of the best banks in the world but had a dream of going to Singapore one day. I worked tirelessly for more than 3-4 years finding a job in Singapore while I was in India. I was desperately trying hard applying hundreds of posts every week, emailing job consultants, calling them sometimes but it seemed to be just a dream as I was hardly getting any interview calls until I figured out the way. However, there have been few ups and downs in the story. It took me seven years to write down this book not because it was going to be a novel of thousands of pages but because I lost my job just after a few weeks of arriving in Singapore and one more time after I already had been here for a couple of years. I decided to my thoughts and experiences in the form of a book so that it's helpful for others too who are searching for a job in Singapore. (Connect me on LinkedIn- https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajeshlaskary/)I have structured the book in 3 parts with all my personal experience while answering some questions readers will have in their mind.Part 1: Finding a Job in Singapore Chapter 1: Why Singapore?Chapter 2: Permanent, Contract and Short Term Contract JobsChapter 3: The Typical Job Sectors to Apply Chapter 4: Can I Study and Work? How Much Can I Earn?Chapter 5: The Process of Getting a Job and Relevant VisaChapter 6: Important Things to Do Before You Apply for Any Job in Singapore Chapter 7: Preparing for InterviewsChapter 8: Recruitment Consultancies in Singapore Part 2: Visa Issues & PrecautionsChapter 9: Visa Issues & PrecautionsChapter 10: What Happens and What to Do If You Lose Your Job? Book excerpt: A compelling, illuminating and evocative history of Singapore—the world's most successful city-state. In 1965, Singapore's GDP per capita was on a par with Jordan. Now it has outstripped Japan. After the Second World War and a sudden rupture with newly formed Malaysia, Singapore found itself independent - and facing a crisis. It took the bloody-minded determination and vision of Lee Kuan Yew, its founding premier, to take a small island of diverse ethnic groups with a fragile economy and hostile neighbours and meld it into Asia's first globalised city. Lion City examines the different faces of Singaporean life - from education and health to art, politics and demographic challenges - and reveals how in just half a century, Lee forged a country with a buoyant economy and distinctive identity. It explores the darker side of how this was achieved too; through authoritarian control that led to it being dubbed 'Disneyland with the death penalty'. Jeevan Vasagar, former Singapore correspondent for the Financial Times, masterfully takes us through the intricate history, present and future of this unique diamond-shaped island one degree north of the equator, where new and old have remained connected. Lion City is a personal, insightful and definitive guide to the city, and how its extraordinary rise is shaping East Asia and the rest of the world.
