Book Medicinal Plants Trees Shrubs of Appalachia

Download or read book Medicinal Plants Trees Shrubs of Appalachia written by Bill Church and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Plants Trees and Shrubs of Appalachia I originally wrote this book to help me identify plants in the field, woods and along streams for medicine and a friend suggested that I offer it for sale to other folks to help them also. This is the result of that work. I have studied herbal medicine since 1999 and have taken many classes on herbal medicine throughout the country. I tend to lean more toward the traditional Native American way of healing since that is in my blood. To really learn about the plants you have to put in the dirt time, that means that you have to spend as much time as possible studying them and don't depend on one book, use many different ones as each one gives you a different perspective on each plant. Find teachers to teach you and learn as much as you can from each. My hope is that whoever purchases this book will learn that all weeds are not weeds and that some medicine can come from your own back yard. One instructor that I had on herbal medicine says that she believes that for whatever ailment that you have at the time that you will find the cure in your backyard and I have found that plants will change location from year to year. This book covers 105 medicinal plants with color photographs; with a space on the back of each page for notes. I have provided information on weights & measures, dosages, gathering and drying of herbs, type of preparations, herbal properties, plant terms, a list of symptoms and what herb to use for them, plant usage, location, when to harvest, parts to harvest, when to gather, and when it blooms by month.

The book invites the reader to explore native plants in their wild habitats and offers step-by-step ethical harvesting guidelines while emphasizing conservation issues. The author is a well-respected medical herbalist and teacher who lives in the mountains of north Georgia. Praise for Medicinal Plants of the Southern Appalachians. "This is one volume that I want to own as we enter the post-corporate age: a priceless guide to Southern plant alchemy. This practical yet enchanting botanical brings an ancient art to modernity. These pages are as rich as the cove forests they honor. Even to peruse Howell's manual is healing, and exhilarating, not only because of the book's inherent beauty, but because it contains vital knowledge all of us will need as fossil fuels dwindle and we return to the local. One day this book may save your life." Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, Wild Card Quilt and Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land "An elegant introduction presented in a clear-as-a-bell style that educates as well as entertains." Peter Loewer, author of The Wild Gardener and Jefferson's Garden "There are many comprehensive volumes about medicinal plants in other regions of North America but none for the botanically rich southeast. Now, a widely experienced and knowledgeable herbalist has written a thorough guide to the virtues of Yellow Root, Rabbit Tobacco, Dogwood Bark, Sweet Fern and other better known herbs of the region. From Howell's book, readers can learn to use local plants safely and consciously to improve the health of their families or patients." David Winston, RH (AHG), Dean, Herbal Therapeutics School of Herbal Medicine "An excellent, much needed resource on Southeastern herbs. Well thought out and easy to follow." Tim Blakely, co-author of The Bootstrap Guide to Medicinal Herbs in the Garden, Field and Marketplace "I often remind veterinarians that the foundation of botanical medicine lies in the experience of learning all aspects of medicinal plants thoroughly. This book guides the reader out of the classroom and into the fields and forest where plants become, to the student, more tangible sources of healing. Recommended for any practitioner who wants to deepen their understanding of our native apothecary." Susan Wynn, DVM, RH (AHG), Executive Director, Veterinary Botanical Medical Assoc.

Book Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States Classic Reprint written by Alice Henkel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Medicinal Plants of the United States In connection with the work of drug-plant Investigations many inquiries are received from various parts of the country asking for a list Of the drug-producing plants Of the regions concerned and for information as to the parts of the plants used in'medicine, etc. It being Impossible to comply with requests of this nature in any satis factory way, Miss Henkel was asked to compile a list of the drug plants of this country, using as a basis the catalogues of dealers in crude drugs and the standard works on systematic botany. It has seemed from an inspection of these lists and of much current phar maceutical literature that the recent changes in botanical nomenclature have succeeded one another too, rapidly to permit the drug dealer and the pharmacist to keep pace with them. This has resulted in consider able confusion in regard to botanical names, and in some cases in the matter of the common names of drug-producing plants. In such a list as that herewith presented the opportunity for helping to clear up this situation has seemed worth improving. The recent appearance of the new Pharmacopoeia, In which the botanical nomenclature has been revised, has seemed to emphasize the desirability of making this attempt, since the names in the case of official plants will be fairly definitely fixed among pharmacists for the next ten years. In the accompanying list the pharmacopoeial names are given and a revision of the nomenclature of the unofficial drugs is also presented. Mr. Frederick V. Obville, Botanist, has kindly revised the botanical names used in this publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
