Book Handbook for Asian Studies Specialists

Download or read book Handbook for Asian Studies Specialists written by Noriko Asato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable tool for librarians who do reference or collection management, this work is a pioneering offering of expertly selected print and electronic reference tools for East Asian Studies (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). Handbook for Asian Studies Specialists: A Guide to Research Materials and Collection Building Tools is the first work to cover reference works for the main Asian area languages of China, Japan, and Korea. Several leading Asian Studies librarians have contributed their many decades of experience to create a resource that gathers major reference titles—both print and online—that would be useful to today's Asian Studies librarian. Organized by language group, it offers useful information on the many subscription-based and open-source electronic tools relevant to Asian Studies. This book will serve as an essential resource for reference collections at academic libraries. Previously published bibliographies on materials deal with China or Japan or Korea, but none have coalesced information on all three countries into one work, or are written in English. And unlike the other resources available, this work provides the insight needed for librarians to make informed collection management decisions and reference selections.

Book Understanding Korean Americans Mental Health

Download or read book Understanding Korean Americans Mental Health written by Anderson Sungmin Yoon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean American community is one of the major Asian ethnic subgroups in the United States. Though considered among one of the model minority groups, excelling academically and professionally, members in this community are plagued by unaddressed mental health obstacles. In Understanding Korean Americans’ Mental Health: A Guide to Culturally Competent Practices, Program Developments, and Policies, the editors, Anderson Sungmin Yoon, Sung Seek Moon, and Haein Son, examine a variety of mental health issues in the Korean American community, including depression, suicide, substance abuse, and trauma, and convincingly connect these challenges to cultural stigma and racial prejudice. The editors argue that this population and its mental health needs are neglected by current approaches in mainstream mental health services. Alarmingly, the very cultural values that help make up the Korean American community are contributing to its members’ reluctance to seek care, counting both familial and communal shame among the most pressing culprits. This book supports these claims with statistical realities and seeks to gather the relatively scarce research that does exist on this topic to underscore the heightened prevalence of mental health issues among Korean Americans, and the contributors make recommendations for more culturally competent practices, program developments, and policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel: A Korean's Guide To America brings the lessons of Youngsan University English teacher Danny Kessler into comprehensive book form. This book is written as a guide for Koreans who have decided to travel, study, or live in the United States. You (or your parents) are spending a lot of money to go to America. This experience is an investment in your future, and this book is about maximizing that investment. Traveling and living in another part of the world is one of the most significant and unforgettable experiences you will ever have, but it is also an experience that requires preparation and education. The culture you will be exposed to is just as important to understand as the language; however, every year thousands of Koreans invest millions of hours in learning English with virtually no time invested in understanding the cultures in which they will be using it. In this book, you will learn: Basic travel tips to save money, stay safe and be stress free. How to fit in and avoid offending people through a deeper understanding of American manners and values. What Americans think of Korea. How to avoid dangerous people and dangerous places when traveling around America. The major cultural differences between Korea and America that you NEED to know. How to avoid gaining weight when living in America. The differences between Korean and American dating cultures and how to date an American.

Book The Metamorphosis of U S Korea Relations

Download or read book The Metamorphosis of U S Korea Relations written by Jongwoo Han and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends that the long history of America’s interaction with Korea started with the signing of the Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation in 1882, and with the establishment of the Seward-Shufeldt Line. William Seward and Robert Shufeldt shared the same vision of achieving their American goal by opening Korea and extending the Seward-Shufeldt Line from Alaska to link it with the Philippines and the Samoan Islands, thus completing a perfect perimeter for the American era of the Pacific and for its dominance in the Asian market. Initiating diplomatic and trading relations with Korea was Commodore Shufeldt’s finishing touch on the plan for achieving American hegemony in the coming 20th century. In turn, the decline of Chinese sphere of influence over the Korean Peninsula and the fall of Russian power in the region, with the consequential rise of Japanese power there, which led to a change from the SS Line to the Roosevelts’ Theodore-Franklin Line, the colonization of Korea, the division of Korea, the Korean War, and has brought America back nearly full circle to that first encounter in Pyeongyang; the regrettable General Sherman Incident in 1866. This book argues that the United States must uphold its early commitment to peace and amity by now normalizing relations with North Korea in order to bring closure to the “Korean Question.”
