Book A Fatal Embrace

Download or read book A Fatal Embrace written by Frank W. Heuberger and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As business practices increasingly move to humanize the workplace, boundaries between private and public life are undergoing redefinition. Nowhere in contemporary business are the boundaries shifting more rapidly than in the area of human resource services. In the past decade, the growth of corporate programs to address social needs among employees has been explosive. A Fatal Embrace? defines reasons for this phenomenon, which has become a significant trend in professional management in Western societies. A Fatal Embrace? is directed at the current proliferation of personal development programs to improve and spur growth in employees' capabilities. Such services include health benefits, family-care arrangements, employee assistance programs, and leadership training. This trend reflects an underlying assumption that the corporation is responsible for promoting a symbiosis of person and economics. By helping employees become healthier, more relaxed, and more creative, the corporation develops stronger economic performers. A Fatal Embrace? will serve as a catalyst for further research and analysis in the area of human resource programs and is an important book to be read by economists, sociologists, and professionals in business and management.

Book The Benefits and Costs of Good Child Care

Download or read book The Benefits and Costs of Good Child Care written by Gordon Cleveland and published by Childcare Resource & Research Unit, University of Toronto. This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details an assessment of the economic impact of a major investment of public money in good quality child care for Canadian children 2 to 5 years of age. Chapter 1 provides an extended discussion of the background and techniques of economic analysis used to make judgments about the economic benefits and costs of child care. Chapter 2 reviews evidence concerning the developmental and educational impacts of child care on young children. Chapter 3 presents and analyzes evidence concerning the economic impacts of child care on mothers' participation in the labor force in particular, and on family life in general. Chapter 4 considers the economy-wide employment effects and the macroeconomic effects of potential child care programs. Chapter 5 calculates, using a variety of approximation techniques, the value of the benefits and the costs of a program of high quality child care for all preschoolers. Chapter 6 presents the conclusions, which note that the incremental benefits of the identified changes to child care arrangements in Canada amount to approximately two dollars for every dollar of cost to the public purse. The report argues that society has the responsibility to care for preschool and school-age children, and to provide parental leave from work. Appendices include, "Problems with Studies on Child Development" and "Methodology of Costs and Benefits Calculation." (Contains approximately 200 references.) (KB)

Book excerpt: The Work and Family Handbook is a comprehensive edited volume, which reviews a wide range of disciplinary perspectives across the social sciences on the study of work-family relationships, theory, and methods. The changing demographics of the labor force has resulted in an expanded awareness and understanding of the intricate relations between work and family dimensions in people's lives. For the first time, the efforts of scholars working in multiple disciplines are organized together to provide a comprehensive overview of the perspectives and methods that have been applied to the study of work and family. In this book, the leading work-family scholars in the fields of social work, psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, human resource management, business, and other disciplines provide chapters that are both accessible and compelling. This book demonstrates how cross-disciplinary comparisons of perspective and method reveal new insights on the needs of working families, the challenges faced by those who study them, and how to formulate policy on their behalf.
