Furthermore, few references are available on how these approaches can be applied specifically to developing agriculture in Africa. 'Building Competitiveness in Africa s Agriculture: A Guide to Value Chain Concepts and Applications' describes practical implementation approaches and illustrates them with scores of real African agribusiness case studies. Using these examples, the 'Guide' presents a range of concepts, analytical tools, and methodologies centered on the value chain that can be used to design, implement, and evaluate agricultural and agribusiness development initiatives. It stresses principles of market focus, collaboration, information sharing, and innovation. The 'Guide' begins by examining core concepts and issues related to value chains. A brief literature review then focuses on five topics of particular relevance to African agricultural value chains. These topics address challenges faced by value chain participants and practitioners that resonate through the many cases described in the book. The core of the book presents methodological tools and approaches that blend important value chain concepts with the topics and with sound business principles. The tools and case studies have been selected for their usefulness in supporting market-driven, private-sector initiatives to improve value chains. The 'Guide' offers 13 implementation approaches, presented within the implementation cycle of a value chain program, followed by descriptions of actual cases. Roughly 60 percent of the examples are from Africa, while the rest come from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The 'Guide' offers useful guidance to businesspeople, policy makers, representatives of farmer or trade organizations, and others who are engaged in agro-enterprise and agribusiness development. Until now food production overall has broadly kept pace with demand. To maintain this impressive achievement, production from the land needs to be intensified, soil fertility must be enhanced, forests and water resources must be conserved, and land use practices must be sustainable over the long term. This book shows what needs to be done, and points to how best to achieve this. The book starts with a brief guide to what plants and animals need to grow well, how farmers currently use the land, and the research that is being conducted on new agricultural technologies. A comparison is made of productivity on small and large farms, which demonstrates that, contrary to some suggestions, small farmers, properly serviced, can be as productive or even more productive than larger farms. Subsequent chapters discuss issues of land tenure, pastoralism, training, the importance of women farmers, access to finance, markets, value chains, and contract farming as a partnership between small-scale producers, processors and traders in agricultural products. The final section of the book discusses whether a new “green revolution” is feasible or desirable for Africa. The potential risks and benefits of dependence on purchased agrochemicals, genetically modified varieties, and multinational seed and chemical companies are examined. A series of twelve broad policy proposals for achieving a sustainable agriculture sector is presented for consideration. Fifteen case studies illustrate the issues discussed in the book. Most of the examples are from East Africa, particularly Tanzania, but the principles addressed are relevant across the African continent. Each chapter of the book includes references and suggestions for further reading, most of them freely available to anyone with internet access. A set of essay questions exploring the issues covered in each chapter is included, to provide practical help for students of agriculture and their teachers.

Book excerpt: "A key challenge facing Kenya is to ensure the food and nutrition security of present and future generations while protecting the country's natural resource base. Kenya's population currently stands at about 40 million and is projected to reach 60 million by the year 2030. Kenya remains a food-deficit country even in bumper harvest years. Discussions of food security in Kenya usually revolve around maize, since the country's food security is overwhelmingly dependent on it, despite a continued structural deficit in maize production. Overall, vulnerability to food insecurity in the country is exacerbated by the absence of substantive diversification in food production and consumption. Annual per capita consumption of maize in Kenya is estimated at 98 kg. That translates into an equivalent overall demand of about 40 million bags every year. Domestic maize production is around 25 million bags, reaching 40 million in a good year. Food prices have generally been on the increase in Kenya in the recent past, owing to a combination of factors, including droughts, global price trends and government policy. The recent high prices of food and fuel are also challenging some of Kenya's macroeconomic fundamentals because they have resulted in higher inflation (estimated at more than 10 percent over the last few years) and contributed to a sharp decline in the foreign exchange rate. Diversifying the country's food base is therefore an important strategy for reducing Kenya's vulnerability to international food price shocks. Additionally, since average arable land per household is shrinking rapidly owing to a combination of rapid population growth and continued urban sprawl, crops that can produce more food, more nutrients and more cash per unit area and time are gaining increasing importance in the quest for solutions to Kenya's perennial food security problems."--Publisher's description.

Since the slump in the copper prices, production of copper has gone down leading to declined exports. This has resulted in reduced forex inflows from the mining as it is the major contributor to the economy. After privatization of major industries including the mines in early 90s, Agriculture has become one of the key sectors and it is also the largest provider of employment opportunities in the country, contributing over seventy percent of jobs in the country. This book tries to profile the progression of agribusiness development in the country. It brings out some of the salient points that have led to agribusiness stagnation for over fifty years after independence. It also highlights some of the policy mistakes the country has made as a country and in some cases, provides suggestions for possible solutions. It emphasizes the fact that agriculture sector can be a cornerstone of the manufacturing sector. The book also highlights some of the great potential the country has and some other sectors that have great opportunities for investments. The book clearly points out the key sectors as being agriculture, tourism, mining and manufacturing. In the closing chapter, the book draws the readers to some of the articles that were published with three local tabloids from 2012 to 2018 to give it a practical touch of agribusiness and some of the successes achieved thus far.

Youth, however, has been declining to engage in agriculture. Notable is that agriculture is the main economic activity of Kenya. The sector has been recording a poor performance in the recent years and the continuous decline of youth engaging in agriculture may lead to a further setback. The effect will be a strain to the achievements of set government goals towards economic growth and development. Therefore, this study sought to assess challenges affecting youth engagement in agriculture in Kiambu County. Specifically, the study sought to find out; to what extent knowledge, land, attitude and credit affect youth’s engagement in agriculture. The study was conducted in Limuru Sub County because of the issue of high land fragmentation. The study adopted a survey research design that was cross sectional in nature. It targeted a population of 10,633 youth. The researcher used proportionate sampling to sample 300 youths from the peri-urban population of the constituency. A semi structured questionnaire was administered to both female and male research subjects. Thereafter, quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) computer software version 11.5. The data was presented in form of frequencies, means, pie chart bar graphs and standard deviation. Pearson’s r, correlation was used to determine the relationship between the variables whereas, qualitative data analysis was based on grounded theories and presented along emerging themes. The study concluded that lack of land and a poor attitude towards agriculture were the major causes of non-engagement in agriculture. The study further concluded that agricultural knowledge led to an interest in agriculture engagement. It also found out that in peri- urban areas, because of availability of casual jobs and business opportunities, capital for agriculture was raised through personal and group savings more than borrowing from financial institutions. The study recommended reviving farmer cooperatives, extensive training focusing on importance of youth engagement in agriculture for families and frequent farm visits to demonstrate new farming techniques for youth. Further it recommended formation of structured financial groups by youth.
