SECTION FIRST. VIEW OP THE COUNTRY AS FORMED BY NATURE. At Lucerne, in Switzerland, is shewn a Model of the Alpine country which encompasses the Lake of the four Cantons. The Spectator ascends a little platform, and sees mountains, lakes, glaciers, rivers, woods, waterfalls, and vallies, with their cottages, and every other object contained in them, lying at his feet; all things being represented in their appropriate colours. It may be easily conceived that this exhibition affords an exquisite delight to the imagination, tempting it to wander at will from valley to valley, from mountain to mountain, through the deepest recesses of the Alps. But it supplies also a more substantial pleasure: for the sublime and beautiful region, with all its hidden treasures, and their bearing's and relations to each other, is thereby comprehended and understood at once. B Something of this kind, without touching upon minute details and individualities which would only confuse and embarrass, will here be attempted, in respect to the Lakes in the north of England, and the vales and mountains enclosing and surrounding them. The delineation, if tolerably executed, will, in someinstances,"communicate to the traveller., .. rab.o. has already seen the objects, newinfornaalioxi; and will assist in giving to his recollections a more orderly arrangement than his own "opportunities of observing may have permitteS him to make; while it will be still more Jis&t ful to the future traveller, by directing-his-atr tention at once to distinctions Iii thjngswhich, without such previous aid, a length of time only could enable him to discover. Book William Wordsworth and the Invention of Tourism 1820 1900

Download or read book William Wordsworth and the Invention of Tourism 1820 1900 written by Saeko Yoshikawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her study of the opening of the English Lake District to mass tourism, Saeko Yoshikawa examines William Wordsworth’s role in the rise and development of the region as a popular destination. For the middle classes on holiday, guidebooks not only offered practical information, but they also provided a fresh motive and a new model of appreciation by associating writers with places. The nineteenth century saw the invention of Robert Burns’s and Walter Scott’s Borders, Shakespeare’s Stratford, and the Brontë Country as holiday locales for the middle classes. Investigating the international cult of Wordsworthian tourism, Yoshikawa shows both how Wordsworth’s public celebrity was constructed through the tourist industry and how the cultural identity of the Lake District was influenced by the poet’s presence and works. Informed by extensive archival work, her book provides an original case study of the contributions of Romantic writers to the invention of middle-class tourism and the part guidebooks played in promoting the popular reputations of authors.

Book The Making of a Cultural Landscape

Download or read book The Making of a Cultural Landscape written by Jason Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the English Lake District has been renowned as an important cultural, sacred and literary landscape. It is therefore surprising that there has so far been no in-depth critical examination of the Lake District from a tourism and heritage perspective. Bringing together leading writers from a wide range of disciplines, this book explores the tourism history and heritage of the Lake District and its construction as a cultural landscape from the mid eighteenth century to the present day. It critically analyses the relationships between history, heritage, landscape, culture and policy that underlie the activities of the National Park, Cumbria Tourism and the proposals to recognise the Lake District as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It examines all aspects of the Lake District's history and identity, brings the story up to date and looks at current issues in conservation, policy and tourism marketing. In doing so, it not only provides a unique and valuable analysis of this region, but offers insights into the history of cultural and heritage tourism in Britain and beyond.
