Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide for the Zulu Court Interpreter This booklet has been written with a view to supplying what is believed to have been a long-felt need for the Court Interpreter, and more especially the very junior one who has just entered upon the threshold of his career. In presenting to junior and even to more experienced interpreters the facts outlined within the narrow limits of this booklet, I wish to point out that I do not pose as a fully-fledged authority on the wide and complicated subject with which it deals. My object is, however, to render invaluable assistance by placing on record such information as must frequently be referred to Zulu Interpreters in Courts of Law, and thereby to evoke a livelier interest in the study of Zulu terminology among those whose vocation it may be to become Court Interpreters. It will therefore be appreciated that the facts and information contained in this booklet should be of invaluable assistance to my fellow-interpreters. While endeavouring to conform to conciseness and clarity of content, the latter has not been sacrificed for brevity. It nevertheless must be admitted that no one is more conscious of the limitations and the apparent deficiencies of this work, than the author. I have had to omit much that I should have liked to include within these narrow limits, but the reader should garner useful and valuable information from the various and varied references contained in this booklet, which purposes to be mainly a work of reference. In a more direct way, it is meant to foster an ambition among the aspirant interpreter that will beget a desire for research into the intricacies of his everyday work. Such were the genuine motives that inspired the writer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isizulu: A Grammar of the Zulu Language; Accompanied With a Historical Introduction, Also With an Appendix In the hitherto unexplored crypts' and recesses of different languages, lie entombed the memorials of the world's slow marches and solemn changes; and, as the philologist has the high office of interpreting the voice of God, in the Holy Scriptures, to the world, so is it his grand function to interpret man to himself, and to unroll at his feet the scroll of the past as it has actually been rolled up together in the gradual development of human life and action - New Englander, Aug., 1858. Book From the Classroom to the Courtroom

Download or read book From the Classroom to the Courtroom written by Elena M. de Jongh and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Classroom to the Courtroom: A guide to interpreting in the U.S. justice system offers a wealth of information that will assist aspiring court interpreters in providing linguistic minorities with access to fair and expeditious judicial proceedings. The guide will familiarize prospective court interpreters and students interested in court interpreting with the nature, purpose and language of pretrial, trial and post-trial proceedings. Documents, dialogues and monologues illustrate judicial procedures; the description of court hearings with transcripts creates a realistic model of the stages involved in live court proceedings. The innovative organization of this guide mirrors the progression of criminal cases through the courts and provides readers with an accessible, easy-to-follow format. It explains and illustrates court procedure as well as provides interpreting exercises based on authentic materials from each successive stage. This novel organization of materials around the stages of the judicial process also facilitates quick reference without the need to review the entire volume — an additional advantage that makes this guide the ideal interpreters’ reference manual. Supplementary instructional aids include recordings in English and Spanish and a glossary of selected legal terms in context.

Book The Practice of Court Interpreting

Download or read book The Practice of Court Interpreting written by Alicia B. Edwards and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995-07-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Practice of Court Interpreting describes how the interpreter works in the court room and other legal settings. The book discusses what is involved in court interpreting: case preparation, ethics and procedure, the creation and avoidance of error, translation and legal documents, tape transcription and translation, testifying as an expert witness, and continuing education outside the classroom. The purpose of the book is to provide the interpreter with a map of the terrain and to suggest methods that will help insure an accurate result. The author, herself a practicing court interpreter, says: “The structure of the book follows the structure of the work as we do it.” The book is intended as a basic course book, as background reading for practicing court interpreters and for court officials who deal with interpreters.

Book Lessons in Zulu Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lessons in Zulu Classic Reprint written by F. Suter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Zulu It has been my privilege and pleasure for a number of years to teach the Zulu language to the Missionaries of the South Africa General Mission, who have, from time to time, come to South Africa to work among the Zulu speaking peoples. When it first became part of my duty to teach the Zulu language there were not so many Zulu Grammars as at present in existence, and those in use being complained of as difficult, I felt urged to attempt a simpler method, not, however, with the idea of producing a book. The Lessons used have become known to a wide circle of friends outside of the and their urgent request for publication is the principal reason for their appearance in print. The Lessons have been carefully revised, and the orthography adopted is that of the finding of the Zulu Orthography Conference of May 29th to 3lst inclusive, 1907, of which I was secretary, and a copy of the Rules is inserted at the end of this book. It has been my endeavour to give a rule for everything, and to make the Lessons as simple as possible, giving the student only such matter as actually needed. That some degree of success has been gained is attested by the results already accomplished. While copious examples are given I have purposely omitted exercises for translation from English into Zulu, being persuaded that in the study of a new language the mind should be confined to the idiom of the new language so that at the earliest possible stage the student shall be induced to think in the language he is seeking to acquire. Book An English Zulu Dictionary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English-Zulu Dictionary: With the Principles of Pronunciation and Classification Fully Explained It contains Zulu for about Eighteen Thousand English Words. The whole of the Zulu will not be equally well known in every part of Natal. For example, plants indigenous in the upper d stricts may appear exotic to natives residing on the coast, or vice versa; hence the thing itself being unknown, the name also will probably be unknown. For valuable assistance afforded in the preparation of the Dictionary, the Author is indebted to several ministers and laymen. To those gentlemen who examined parts of the work in manuscript, and the brethren of the Natal District who unanimously and cordially recommended it to the consideration of the Missionary Committee, he is under peculiar obligations.
