Download or read book A Guide for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology written by Henry R. Linville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With a Text-Book in General Zoology Questions have been arranged both in the form of numbered and unnumbered paragraphs in order that teachers may com pare the two methods; for better comparison the directions for the study of the living locust and the living frog have been printed in both ways. It will be noticed that drawings are required of the pupil after he has studied the animal, and that emphasis is laid on drawings showing the parts in their proper relation in the animal body; in only a few cases, where certain organs cannot be clearly shown in the body, are they to be separated and made the subject of a distinct drawing. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... A LABORATORY GUIDE CHAPTERS I-IX. INSECTS Suggestions To Teachers The locust has been quite generally found a satisfactory form with which to begin the study of insects. Its structure is sufficiently generalized to make observation of the external structure easy, and the various species are widely distributed and usually abundant in the autumn at a time when many schools begin the study of zoology. For the living animal the local species may be used, and the work may be carried on in the field or in the laboratory. Specimens may be collected till quite late in the autumn, in grassy areas in the central and eastern United States, and they will live for some time if kept in a breeding-cage or other receptacle, with a piece of sod. For the external structure, either the Carolina locust (Dissoteira carolina), the American migratory locust (Acridium americanum), or the lubber locust (Eomalea microptera) may be used. These are all large species, which may be obtained, if not local to the region, from dealers in natural-history supplies. The authors do not require their pupils to dissect a locust. They have sometimes shown some of the systems of internal organs by dissecting specimens themselves before small groups of pupils, or they have used models or charts, supplemented by blackboard drawings. Very often pupils are found who are able to work out the gross anatomy, and their services may be enlisted for the benefit of other members of the class. The i development of the locust should be studied by means of specimens collected by the pupils or teacher, or obtained of dealers in natural-history supplies. Drawings to a convenient scale, made after the pupil has examined the organs, serve to fix their appearance in the mind. The pupil should...

Download or read book Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology written by Robert W. Hegner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. These animals should, however, be demonstrated to the students whenever possible. A list of species suitable for laboratory study may be compiled from the textbook, and specimens may be obtained from the dealers whose names appear in the appended list. Details such as topics for library study, questions for review, etc., have purposely been omitted from this laboratory manual in order that each teacher may have an opportunity to carry out his own ideas regarding these subjects. It has also been left for the teacher to decide which of the exercises should be shortened, or left out entirely, if the time necessary for studying them all is not available. The methods of teaching zoology and physiology are ably treated in Part II of Lloyd and Bigelow's book, "The Teaching of Biology in Secondary Schools," published by Longmans, 1904. Price $1.50. Discussions of courses in zoology will also be found in current numbers and back volumes of the magazine "School Science and Mathematics." Laboratory equipment and supplies may be obtained from the following dealers. Catalogues may be secured from them through a simple postal card request. Bausch & Lomb Optical Co., Rochester, N.Y. It is the first of its kind in this subject area that guides students through the diverse and fascinating fields of behavioral and ethological studies, employing a wide array of organisms as model systems for the study of behavior. Students participate in the development of hypothesis and turn the recording, analysis, and interpretation of data into an active and engaging process. A teacher-friendly companion website provides extensive teaching notes on the background to each lab project, tips and hints for successful project presentation, sources for studying organisms, ideas for variations in labs, and alternate study organisms. This text is recommended for undergraduate courses in Animal Behavior, Ethology, and Behavioral Ecology. Book A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Zoology

Download or read book A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Zoology written by Clarence Moores Weed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Zoology It is generally conceded that a satisfactory course in zoology requires both laboratory study of animal forms and lecture or text-book presentation of the laws of animal life. The teachers most conversant with pedagogical principles also contend that the greatest educational value of the subject lies in the opportunity it gives to furnish the student with an adequate first-hand knowledge of organic evolution. To accomplish this a course in which the pupil begins with the lower forms and works gradually upward is necessary. For the pupil thus follows the development of living things, seeing how each succeeding form is an improvement over the one that went before, and getting some idea of the great laws which govern the growth and sequence of animal life. In his study of these forms of life the pupil needs a guide which shall lead him wisely without telling him too much, and which shall stimulate him to see and to think without bewildering him with questions that he cannot answer. In this little book such an attempt is made. Since the directions were first used in my own classes some ten years ago modifications have been made every year, until in their present form I have found them thoroughly workable with average classes of beginners in zoology.
