Book A Greek Grammar for Beginners Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Greek Grammar for Beginners Classic Reprint written by William Henry Waddell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Greek Grammar for Beginners -tms book is an attempt to be precisely what its name imports - nothing more, and nothing less. It is a Greek Grammar for Beginners. The author has studiously avoided the insertion of a solitary word not absolutely essential. Such a book has been, for many years, a great desideratum - a book which shall contain no notes, remarks, observations, fire print, in short, to be marked by a teacher for omission, but only essential and elementary principles and paradigms, which are to be thoroughly memorized by the pupil, without any ex ception whatever. The Grammar is designed to be committed to memory, from cover to cover, the first time the pupil goes over it. It is not, therefore, 9. Grammar of reference - the world is full of such. It is a schoolboy's book, and intended for a schoolboy's use. Whether the author has succeeded in perfecting his wishes, and in giving expression to his many years' experience in teaching Greek, he leaves the public to decide. Book School Greek Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Greek Grammar Classic Reprint written by William W. Goodwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Greek Grammar This work is an abridgment of the author's Greek Grammar which was published in 1879 in London and in Boston, us. The larger work was written primarily for the higher classes of classical schools, in the hope that it might supply the wants (for both study and refer ence) of even the best scholars until the beginning of their university studies. At the same time, it was thought that the parts in larger type with the paradigms could be used to advantage even with beginners in Greek. The author's experience with a much smaller grammar in the United States had shown that nearly all classical teachers there preferred to use the same text-book in all their classes, and that the grammar with which a boy began his study of Greek and Latin at school was generally carried to college, and was not always discarded even there. Book An Elementary Greek Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Greek Grammar Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Bryant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Greek Grammar The growing recognition of the importance, in the early years of education, of English and kindred subjects has led naturally to the postponement of Greek, which is now begun by the normal boy about thirteen instead of between ten and twelve. Boys thus come to the language with better-trained linguistic faculties and also with less time to spare for the preliminary stages. To define and simplify these preliminary stages, so that the beginner may pass on to read Greek authors with a Lexicon as soon as is consistent with practical efficiency and accuracy, is the object of the following pages. The writers have omitted everything which their experience as teachers of low classical forms shows to be unnecessary for beginners: the omission of the unessential has been the guiding principle of the book. A quick learner should pass effectively through the four stages here defined in four school terms: a slower boy will take two years or longer. Book The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek

Download or read book The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek written by Evert van Emde Boas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale reference grammar of Classical Greek in English in a century. The first work of its kind to reflect significant advances in linguistics made in recent decades, it provides students, teachers and academics with a comprehensive yet user-friendly treatment. The chapters on phonology and morphology make full use of insights from comparative and historical linguistics to elucidate complex systems of roots, stems and endings. The syntax offers linguistically up-to-date descriptions of such topics as case usage, tense and aspect, voice, subordinate clauses, infinitives and participles. An innovative section on textual coherence treats particles and word order and discusses several sample passages in detail, demonstrating new ways of approaching Greek texts. Throughout the book numerous original examples are provided, all with translations and often with clarifying notes. Clearly laid-out tables, helpful cross-references and full indexes make this essential resource accessible to users of all levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Greek Grammar Greek Course of which this First Greek Grammar should be the starting point. The aim of the new series is to bring into the fore ground the great main lines of Greek accidence and syntax, in short to teach the regular and ordinary modes of expres sion in use at the time when the most precise of languages had reached its highest precision. Accordingly it was necos sary carefully to revise the Grammar if it was to take its proper place in the series. I have to acknowledge a great deal of very generous and valued help, not only from my colleagues and friends, but also from many others who in using the book had detected errors or observed ways of improving it. More especially I have to thank my colleague Mr. Heard for many suggestions and much assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Notes to Greek Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes to Greek Grammar Classic Reprint written by Anders Olof Bersell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes to Greek Grammar The following Notes are the result of a rather dis couraging experience gathered during a period of twenty years of work in the class room. Such as they are they have simply forced themselves upon the author. It has always been with a keen sense of com passion that he has been compelled, each year, to put into the hands of the beginner in his subject a large volume with a bewildering wealth of information, of rules and counter-rules, more or less indefinite, and of lengthy discussions - all good and necessary in formation for'the advanced student. But the very sight of this endless stringbfz rules has invariably proved to be discouraging to the beginne1. The only means of counteracting this influence has been found to be a selection of the most essential principles and a condensation of the same into as few definite rules as possible. And during the course of his work the author has found - paradoxical as the statement may seem - that the less of grammatical details he has given his students the more Greek they have been enabled to acquire. Each successive year hastaught him a new lesson in this respect, and he has yielded to the necessity of constant condensation, the result of which is hereby presented. Book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint written by John Williams White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Greek Book Since the publication of my Beginner's Greek Book in 1892, I have from time to time had letters from teachers in different parts of the country, who have informed me that the Beginner's Book, because of its length, was not well adapted for use in the schools in which they taught, and who have urged me to prepare a briefer book on the same plan. They wished a book, they said, which could be completed in two terms, and which would properly prepare their pupils for the rapid but exact reading of a book of the Anabasis during the last third of the year. The First Greek Book is an attempt to meet this reasonable request. I am aware that it is impossible that any elementary book should be equally well adapted to the needs of all schools but I have at least succeeded in making this book briefer than its immediate predecessor. In writing it I have aimed to give, first, only such fundamental facts of Greek grammar as the young pupil must know before he can begin to read the connected narrative of Xenophon intelligently and with pleasure, and secondly, a moderate amount of practice, both in reading and in writing, in the application of these principles. I have entirely excluded from the eighty lessons into which the First Greek Book is divided the Attic second declension, the systematic treatment of the affinity of words, word lists, word groups, the principles of word formation, and the divi sion of verbs into eight classes, although provision is made for the study of some of these important matters, if the teacher finds the time for it, in the materials furnished in the Appendix. Further. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
