Book The Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul

Download or read book The Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul written by Jan N. Bremmer and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the Visio Pauli, the most popular early Christian apocalypse in the Middle Ages. The volume starts with a short study of the textual traditions of the Visio Pauli, its Jewish and early Christian traditions as well as its influence on later literature, such as Dante. This is followed by studies of the Prologue, the four rivers of Eden, the place of the Ocean, the relation between body and soul, the image of hell and its punishments, and the connection with fantastic literature. Finally, a codicological, comparative, and textual re-evaluation of the Coptic translation attempts to correct earlier errors and to rehabilitate the value and interest of this long neglected version of the Visio Pauli. The book is concluded with a study of the earthly tribunal in the fourth heaven of the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul. As has become customary, the volume is rounded off by an extensive bibliography of the Visio Pauli and the Gnostic Apocalypse of Paul and a detailed index.

Book Christ s Object Lessons Illustrated

Download or read book Christ s Object Lessons Illustrated written by Ellen G. White and published by Digital Inspiration. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage Edition—Over 100 illustrations of a century ago. Unabridged, original text consisting of inspiring and profound lessons from the stories and parables which Jesus told. Christ the Great Teacher gave much of His instruction as He walked with His disciples through the hills and valleys of Palestine or rested by the lake or river. In His parable teaching He linked divine truth with common things and incidents, as may be found in the experiences of the shepherd, the builder, the tiller of the soil, the traveler, and the homemaker. Familiar objects were associated with thoughts true and beautiful—thoughts of God’s loving interest in us, of the grateful homage that is His due, and of the care we should have one for another. Thus lessons of divine wisdom and practical truth were made forcible and impressive. The Scripture says, “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; . . . that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” Matt. 13:34, 35. Natural things were the medium for the spiritual; the things of nature and the life-experience of His hearers were connected with the truths of the written word. Leading thus from the natural to the spiritual kingdom, Christ’s parables are links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven. In this volume the parables are grouped according to their subjects, and their lessons are developed and illustrated. The book is full of gems of truth, and to many readers it will give a richer meaning to the common surroundings of everyday life.

Book The Little Book of Providence

Download or read book The Little Book of Providence written by Richard Barker and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final book of the bible "Revelation" is allusive and mysterious, none more so than chapter ten regarding "The Little Book", not least because John the Divine was not permitted to write down the meaning of the prophecy. This little book does not claim entirely to resolve the mystery but does provide insights into the likely subject matter of the book or scroll John was instructed to consume. That subject is divine providence and how since a Bible-based theology was first systematized in the 4th/5th century its munificence has been diminished through some erroneous doctrines that were incorporated. Along with some radical insights of his own, the author draws upon the testimony and biblical interpretations of the more significant pre-Augustinian Christian writers and theologians to make the case that the fruits of Christ's Passion extend beyond Israel and the Church, resulting in a providence worthy of a Creator defined in Scripture as Love personified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Envisioning cruciform community built on resurrection hope After Paul’s encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, he turned from coercion and violence to a ministry centered on the hope of Christ’s resurrection. In earthly terms, Paul had traded power for weakness. But—as he explained in his subsequent letters—this “weakness” was actually the key to flourishing community that is able to experience God’s transformation, restoration, and healing. What would it mean for pastors today to take seriously Paul’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 11:1 to “imitate me as I imitate Christ” and lead their congregations in this way? Instead of drawing leadership principles and practices from the worlds of business, education, and politics—which tend to orient churches around institutional power and image maintenance—Timothy Gombis follows Paul in resisting the influence of the “present evil age” by making cruciformity the operating principle of the church. Gombis guides the reader through practices and patterns that can lead a congregation past a focus on individual salvation, toward becoming instead a site of resurrection power on earth.

Book excerpt: Jesus described a divine separation from sinners in Luke 16 as the "great gulf fixed". Man's "free will" created it. This book examines God's repeated enforcement of the "great gulf" separation upon sinful mankind through history. It is demonstrated through the accounts of: The closed gate of Eden. The closed door of Noah's Ark. The closed communications by the confusion of languages. The closed direct fellowship with God through Abraham. The closed path of salvation to men through the Law. And finally, as revealed by the Scriptures, The closed access to salvation by mankind's, now, fallen will through self-generated "faith".

Book The Justice of God in the Damnation of Sinners

Download or read book The Justice of God in the Damnation of Sinners written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crime is more or less heinous, according as we are under greater or less obligations to the contrary. This is self-evident; because it is herein that the criminalness or faultiness of any thing consists, that it is contrary to what we are obliged or bound to, or what ought to be in us. So the faultiness of one being hating another, is in proportion to his obligation to love him. The crime of one being despising and casting contempt on another, is proportionably more or less heinous, as he was under greater or less obligations to honour him. The fault of disobeying another, is greater or less, as any one is under greater or less obligations to obey him. And therefore if there be any being that we are under infinite obligations to love, and honour, and obey, the contrary towards him must be infinitely faulty. Our obligation to love, honour, and obey any being, is in proportion to his loveliness, honourableness, and authority; for that is the very meaning of the words. When we say any one is very lovely, it is the same as to say, that he is one very much to be loved. Or if we say such a one is more honourable than another, the meaning of the words is, that he is one that we are more obliged to honour. If we say any one has great authority over us, it is the same as to say, that he has great right to our subjection and obedience. But God is a being infinitely lovely, because he hath infinite excellency and beauty. To have infinite excellency and beauty, is the same thing as to have infinite loveliness. He is a being of infinite greatness, majesty, and glory; and therefore he is infinitely honourable. He is infinitely exalted above the greatest potentates of the earth, and highest angels in heaven; and therefore he is infinitely more honourable than they. His authority over us is infinite; and the ground of his right to our obedience is infinitely strong; for he is infinitely worthy to be obeyed himself, and we have an absolute, universal, and infinite dependence upon him. So that sin against God, being a violation of infinite obligations, must be a crime infinitely heinous, and so deserving of infinite punishment.- Nothing is more agreeable to the common sense of mankind, than that sins committed against any one, must be proportionably heinous to the dignity of the being offended and abused; as it is also agreeable to the word of God, I Samuel 2:25. "If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him;" (i.e. shall judge him, and inflict a finite punishment, such as finite judges can inflict;) "but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him?" This was the aggravation of sin that made Joseph afraid of it. Genesis 39:9. "How shall I commit this great wickedness, and sin against God?" This was the aggravation of David's sin, in comparison of which he esteemed all others as nothing, because they were infinitely exceeded by it. Psalm 51:4. "Against thee, thee only have I sinned."-The eternity of the punishment of ungodly men renders it infinite: and it renders it no more than infinite; and therefore renders no more than proportionable to the heinousness of what they are guilty of.

Book excerpt: AMONG all the questions that men have asked, there is one that is of supreme interest and importance. Why are we here? What is our destiny? What lies beyond the grave for the Christian, for the unbeliever? For old, for young? For our fellow citizens, and for the teeming masses in far-away lands serving strange gods? Is there a God who comforts? Is there a God who can assuage the pain of life. Is there really a Christ? Does He live? Is there One who can smooth the wrinkled brow and soften the hard heart? Is there some place, some heaven, some distant Eden or future world where we shall be joined again with our loved ones? God has a plan indeed, God has a wonderful plan for this world! It is a plan of which the architectural drawings were made in eternity. It encompasses the minutest detail of all of creation. I assure you that when time has run its course, and the veil is dropped upon the final scene, we shall discover that that plan has been worked out to its very tiniest detail, just as God had planned it in eternity - that His will has been done!
