Max and his friends have sacrificed much to achieve their goal and restore the dark. They are battered and bruised, yet now they find another legion of powerful enemies barring the path ahead, occupying the very castle Arinna must reclaim. Any sane person would throw up his skeletal hands and be done with it all but not Max. He's more powerful than ever and there's no chance in hell he's going to give up without a fight, whatever the odds. It's time for the team to come together, bringing everything they have to expel the forces of light. The conflict will take them to places they've never been and ask more of them than ever before. With only hours of Max's time remaining, it will be far from easy, but nothing of value is.

The demonic forces that now wield power in the black halls have grown fat on plunder, and they'll not give it up easily. In order to prevail, Max and Arinna must rally new and old allies into an army. They will wage war to restore the throne and reclaim the soul of the dark. Drastic measures will most definitely be necessary and they'd better accomplish them quickly before Max's final moments bleed away.

Download or read book Buddhism in the Sung written by Daniel A. Getz and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-10-31 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New paperback edition The Sung Dynasty (960–1279) has long been recognized as a major watershed in Chinese history. Although there are recent major monographs on Sung society, government, literature, Confucian thought, and popular religion, the contribution of Buddhism to Sung social and cultural life has been all but ignored. Indeed, the study of Buddhism during the Sung has lagged behind that of other periods of Chinese history. One reason for the neglect of this important aspect of Sung society is undoubtedly the tenacity of the view that the Sung marked the beginning of an inexorable decline of Buddhism in China that extended down through the remainder of the imperial era. As this book attests, however, new research suggests that, far from signaling a decline, the Sung was a period of great efflorescence in Buddhism. This volume is the first extended scholarly treatment of Buddhism in the Sung to be published in a Western language. It focuses largely on elite figures, elite traditions, and interactions among Buddhists and literati, although some of the book’s essays touch on ways in which elite traditions both responded to and helped shape more popular forms of lay practice and piety. All of the chapters in one way or another deal with the two most important elite traditions within Sung Buddhism: Ch’an and T’ien-t’ai. Whereas most previous discussions of Buddhism in the Sung have tended to concentrate on Ch’an, the present volume is notable for giving T’ien-t’ai its due. By presenting a broader and more contextualized picture of these two traditions as they developed in the Sung, this work amply reveals the vitality of Buddhism in the Sung as well as its embeddedness in the social and intellectual life of the time.

  • Author : Zara Steiner

Download or read book The Lights that Failed written by Zara Steiner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peace treaties represented an almost impossible attempt to solve the problems caused by a murderous world war. In The Lights that Failed: European International History 1919-1933, part of the Oxford History of Modern Europe series, Steiner challenges the common assumption that the Treaty of Versailles led to the opening of a second European war. In a radically original way, this book characterizes the 1920s not as a frustrated prelude to a second global conflict but as a fascinating decade in its own right, when politicians and diplomats strove to re-assemble a viable European order. Steiner examines the efforts that failed but also those which gave hope for future promise, many of which are usually underestimated, if not ignored. She shows that an equilibrium was achieved, attained between a partial American withdrawal from Europe and the self-imposed constraints which the Soviet system imposed on exporting revolution. The stabilization painfully achieved in Europe reached it fragile limits after 1925, even prior to the financial crises that engulfed the continent. The hinge years between the great crash of 1929 and Hitler's achievement of power in 1933 devastatingly altered the balance between nationalism and internationalism. This wide-ranging study helps us grasp the decisive stages in this process. In a second volume, The Triumph of the Night Steiner will examine the immediate lead up to the Second World War and its early years.
