Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life ST. AUGUSTINE was an indefatigable preacher. He considered regular preaching an indispensable part of the duty of a bishop. To his homilies we owe most of his exegetical labors. The homilies were delivered extempore, taken down by scribes and slightly revised by Augustin. They retain their colloquial form, devotional tone, frequent repetitions, and want of literary finish. He would rather be deficient in rhetoric than not be understood by the people. He was cheered by the eager attention and acclamations of his hearers, but never fully satisfied with his performance. “My preaching,” he says, “almost always displeases me. I eagerly long for something better, of which I often have an inward enjoyment in my thoughts before I can put them into audible words. Then when I find that my power of expression is not equal to my inner apprehension, I am grieved at the inability of my tongue to answer to my heart” (De Catech. Rudibus, ch. II. 3, in this Series, Vol. III. 284). His chief merit as an interpreter is his profound theological insight, which makes his exegetical works permanently useful. This volume contains: The Homilies or Tractates on the GOSPEL OF JOHN (In Joannis Evangelium Tractatus CXXIV. Augustin delivered them to his flock at Hippo about A.D. 416 or later.

Book Comparative Characterization in the Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book Comparative Characterization in the Sermon on the Mount written by Arren Bennet Lawrence and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sermon on the Mount contains many comparisons. In this book, the functions of these comparisons are studied by the methodology called comparative characterization. Characterization is the way a character is characterized in a narrative. Comparative characterization is the characterization of a character using comparisons. In comparative characterization, another character is used as a foil to bring out a characteristic trait of a concerned character. Jesus characterized the ideal disciple in the Sermon on the Mount with many descriptions and imperatives. To characterize the ideal disciple Jesus used many comparisons and highlighted the characteristic features that embody the ideal disciple. The many comparisons used in the Sermon on the Mount are identified in this study through comparative characterization. In addition, the teleological purpose of the comparisons, which is to play as foil to the characterization of the ideal disciple, is identified and highlighted. Thus, this study identifies Jesus' characterization of the ideal disciple and his complex portrayal of the ideal disciple with the many uses of comparisons in the descriptions and imperatives of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.

Book Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers

Download or read book Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume VII of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will discover Saint Augustines commentaries on the writings of John and his first writings as a newly converted Christian. In the Soliloquies, Augustine reasons through his conversion, trying to justify his new faith; these are intensely personal journeys toward truth, the product of a thoughtful soul seeking comfort and reassurance. Spiritual seekers wavering in their faith may find both sections of this book helpful in exploring their beliefs."

Book Daily Sword Sharpening

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph G. Misiaszek
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2023-01-20
  • ISBN : 1664287639
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Daily Sword Sharpening written by Joseph G. Misiaszek and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Word of God is the sword with which we do spiritual battle. You must study His Word regularly if you want to keep your spiritual sword sharp and wield it effectively. In this book, Joseph G. Misiaszek embarks on a daily journey through Scripture, challenging you to take your faith deeper and walk even closer to the Lord. The title—Daily Sword Sharpening—comes from Proverbs 27:17, “As Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” As you read, it is the author’s fervent hope that you not only keep your sword sharp but also utilize it to sharpen others, encourage others, and support others. The author emphasizes that even though the Bible was written over several thousand years and completed about two thousand years ago, truth is truth and is always applicable. For truth to exist, there can only be one source—and that source is God. Challenge yourself to read God’s Word daily and open yourself to the Holy Spirit as He applies Scripture to your life, and through you, to the lives of others.

Book The Tenants in the Vineyard

Download or read book The Tenants in the Vineyard written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2006 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John S. Kloppenborg gives a detailed analysis of one of the most difficult of Jesus' parables, the parable of the Tenants (Mark 12:1-12; Gospel of Thomas 65). He examines the ways in which Christians have typically read and mis-read the parable, and places the parable firmly in the context of the practices of ancient viticulture. The author models a new approach to the interpretation of the parables of Jesus. First, he critically engages the history of interpretation of the text, inquiring into the ideological interests that the parable has engaged during the history of its use in Christian churches and in political discourse. Second, he reconstructs the social world in which the parable was first told, in particular the economic, social, and legal aspects of ancient viticulture. He demonstrates that the parable of the Tenants has mostly been interpreted from the standpoint of those who wield social and political power, a strange irony considering the social status of the Jesus of history and the literary uses of the parable. All of the features common to the parable as it is told by Mark and the Gospel of Thomas make it a perfectly realistic story. It is only Mark's editing of the story that takes it beyond the realistic idiom characteristic of Jesus' other parables. The book concludes with a dossier of 58 papyrus documents relating to various aspects of viticulture and agrarian conflict. It was awarded the 2007 Francis W. Beare Book Award by the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies.
