Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Mpongwe Language, With Vocabularies Notwithstanding these accessions of foreign words, however, the different dialects retain their original words and gramma tical principles without material modification, and show more affinity for each other, than could be expected of barbarous tribes living so far apart and having no intercourse. Nothing, perhaps, has contributed more to keep up these general resemblances, than the peculiar character and strue ture of the languages themselves. Download or read book Heads of Mpongwe Grammar written by John Leighton Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heads of Mpongwe Grammar: Containing Most of the Principles Needed by a Learner The Mpongwe, or Ayogo (wise ones, as they modestly call themselves), live on both Sides of the Gabun River, about a half degree north latitude, extending fifty or sixty miles inte rior. The Orungu, about sixty miles south, and the N kami people from eighty to one hundred miles beyond, speak the same language, with a few differing words, and a slight dif ference of pronunciation. In the present limited extent to which these languages, or dialects, are known and written, it would be useless to attempt to trace their relations and analogies; and we, of the present day, can only contribute our mite for the use of the ones who shall follow us in the coming century. And they will revel in the beauties of a language or dialects as elaborate in structure and as musical in tone as any of the old unspoken (not dead) languages that are the delight of the scholars of the present day. And it is only forty years since any of these di alects (with, perhaps, one or two exceptions) had a sentence written, or even an alphabet. Book A Grammar of the Mandingo Language

Download or read book A Grammar of the Mandingo Language written by Robert Maxwell Macbrair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Mandingo Language: With Vocabularies The greatest difference of dialect existing amongst the aborigines of the Gambia, proceeds from the frequent omission of the possessive and personal pronouns, the neglect of the sign of the possessive case, and the abbreviation of familiar words and phrases. But such contracted forms of expression render the phraseology somewhat ambiguous in its meaning, and would make it almost unintelligible in writing. The natives of Western Africa have also little idea of the value and divisions of time; hence some ambiguity occasionally arises in relating the circum stances of an event. The author has endeavoured to fix the value of the tenses of the verb with as much precision as usage will admit of. Macintyre, have decided to publish a Nupe Grammar and Vocabulary. Having been associated with the Nupe Province since the earliest days of British Administration, I desire to place on record the unsparing devotion and arduous labours performed by the authors of this book in the interests of the Nupe people, their language, life, and customs.
