This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Grammar of the Malagasy Language The language spoken by the various tribes which inhabit Madagascar was essentially a spoken language, no symbols or pictures of the nature of writing having been found, until the early part of the present century; since which time the English Missionaries, by degrees, reduced it to its present alphabetic form. The characters chosen for it were those of our own English alphabet, with the exception of the five letters 0, g, u, w, x, which have no corresponding sounds in Malagasy but some, or all, of these (especially w) seem likely to be incorporated into the Malagasy language along with foreign words which require their use. Book A Concise Introduction to the Study of the Malagasy Language as Spoken in Imerina Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Concise Introduction to the Study of the Malagasy Language as Spoken in Imerina Classic Reprint written by William Edward Cousins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Introduction to the Study of the Malagasy Language as Spoken in Imerina One thing should be impressed on the minds of all who wish to gain a mastery of the language and to use it with freedom, viz. That they must not trust simply to what they can learn from books, or they will acquire but a stiff and bookish style of speaking. On the other hand, it is equally certain that if they are contented to pick up the language by ear only, though they may gain facility in speaking, they will lack accuracy and precision. Careful study of the grammar should go hand in hand with free intercourse with the natives. A beginner should give his main strength during the first year or two to the thorough mastery of the grammar. He should from the outset endeavour as far as possible to avoid forming sentences on English models; and especially should he direct his attention to those points in which the Malagasy language differs so much from his own; eg. In the absence of the logical copula and the consequent difference in the formation of sentences, the common use of the passive, the peculiarities of the relative form, the way in which the agent of an adjunctive verb is expressed, the uses of the particle no, delicate distinctions in the use or omission of the article, etc. If these and similar things are firmly grasped at the outset, a good foundation will exist on which to build. On the other hand, the failure to recognise some of these peculiar features of the language, may lead one to adopt awkward and erroneous modes of expression from which it may be extremely difficult to free one self in after years. Book A Grammar of the Mandingo Language

Download or read book A Grammar of the Mandingo Language written by Robert Maxwell Macbrair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Mandingo Language: With Vocabularies The greatest difference of dialect existing amongst the aborigines of the Gambia, proceeds from the frequent omission of the possessive and personal pronouns, the neglect of the sign of the possessive case, and the abbreviation of familiar words and phrases. But such contracted forms of expression render the phraseology somewhat ambiguous in its meaning, and would make it almost unintelligible in writing. The natives of Western Africa have also little idea of the value and divisions of time; hence some ambiguity occasionally arises in relating the circum stances of an event. The author has endeavoured to fix the value of the tenses of the verb with as much precision as usage will admit of.
