My experience of grammars in general 13 such, that I look for negative more than for positive merit in them. If asked' which I consider the best Italian Grammar, my answer would be The shortest is the best, for, the one that has the least to say about the matter will do the least towards making you abandon the study altogether. The little French works of polidori and vergani are the best of their kind. These do not, ' to be sure, guide you far; but they are useful as far as they go, 'and do not lead you into darkness by unsatisfactory explanations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Grammar of the Italian Language: Progressively Arranged for the Use of Schools and Colleges A logical and philosophical method is therefore necessary to impart the Italian language, as well as intelligence, memory, and a musical ear, on the part of the learner. The latter attainments are often to be found, but there is no Italian grammar within my knowledge which combines all the requisites of a clear and concise treatise; some aiming to teach the classical tongue of the thirteenth century, others to give the mechanical translation of words and phrases, without rules and precepts. The object of this work is to present the elements of the language as it is spoken today, in its simplest garb, both theoretically and practically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Grammar Tms volume is the result of an attempt to put into convenient form and the smallest possible compass all the grammar that the ordinary student of Italian will need. Short as the book is, it con tains some paragraphs which beginners will probably skip: the longer lists of words and endings, and a great part of the chapters on suffixes and irregular verbs will be useful mainly for reference. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Grammar of the Modern Italian Language To make a book really useful it ought to be written with a special regard to the kind of persons whose patro nage it seeks, their age, the stock of kindred knowledge they are likely to possess, the time they can devote to its study and the extent and quality of the notions they ex pect to acquire from it. And although this consideration will be found true with regard to books of any kind, yet there are scarcely any to which it more forcibly applies than to such as are intended to assist the student in the acqui sition of a foreign language. To suit my book to the wants and wishes, as well as to the average capabilities of learners was therefore my constant aim in writing this new Grammar of the Italian language, destined to complete the collection of Grammars of the modern languages issued by the publisher Karl J 11 gel in Frankfort on the Main. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Italian Grammar In writing this little grammar of my native language, it has been my chief object to exhibit in as clear and easy a form as possible the main features of the accidence and syntax combined in their applications to those words and phrases which are most frequently employed in polite conversation. The Italian language, as now Spoken und written by the educated classes, is very simple and precise. Long periods and intricate inversions are no longer in use. We admire them in the works of our standard authors of by-gone ages, but we take great care not to imitate them. Thus, without losing anything of its former grace and harmony, the Italian language has become in this century a very easy language too. This book being intended for beginners and travellers, I have added to it, in the form of an Appendix, a selec tion of useful words and phrases, which, it is confidently hoped, will greatly assist pupils wishing to speak the language as soon as possible. Download or read book An Italian Grammar Classic Reprint written by Ruth Shepard Phelps and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Italian Grammar What is new in this work is chiefly the division and arrange ment of topics, though the Introduction assembles material upon pronunciation and versification not hitherto brought together in English, and there is some novelty in subject matter in the exer cises for translation. The plan of the book has the merit of having grown directly out of the needs of the classroom. The arrange ment is such, it is hoped, as will make the book equally serviceable for the classroom and for private study, and will give it certain of the advantages of both first book and reference grammar. The beginning has been deliberately made very easy. Even the definite article, with which most Italian grammars naturally begin, has been deferred in favor of the indefinite, which, as it lacks a plural, has fewer forms itself and does not immediately require the plural of nouns. This leaves the attention free to center upon the single new principle of the s impure. The definite article with its more complicated forms is not introduced until the fourth les son, and the main body of rules governing its syntax not until the twenty-second. The plural of nouns is treated in its simpler aspects in the third lesson, and extensively in the thirtieth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and Complete Italian Grammar: Containing a Short Introduction to the Italian Pronunciation; Plain and Concise Rules and Observations Upon the Nine Parts of Speech, Exemplified and Sanctioned by Passages Taken From the Best Italian Writers There are critics, who, on that ao count, complain of a wearisome mo notchy in our language but let them read an Italian author, if they have never yet read one, and they will see that if we have not, as the Latin, that multiplicity of Words ending in as and am, the pronunciation of which must have been rough and sharp, we have however, some terminating with a con sonant, and besides, we make a fre quent use of elisions (t), which pro perly arranged by a delicate and judi cious ear, render our language diyersi fied, and, at the same time, harmonious. This is so true, that music, which can alone decide with respect to 3 various and sweet harmony, cannot have a more suitable language than the Italian.
