Book A Grammar of the Hausa Language

Download or read book A Grammar of the Hausa Language written by Frederick William Hugh Migeod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hausa Language This Grammar is primarily for students who have already acquired some knowledge of the Hausa language. In its compilation the Author has been at pains to make the vocabulary as diversified as possible, so that there are few words in common use that have not been made use of. All rules, too, have been fully illustrated, and, as regards such as have only been slightly noticed by other writers, the Author has for preference selected sentences from texts to which all students of the language have access. In this way the existence of the rules themselves is more readily recognised. The origin of the Hausa language is not inquired into here, and etymologies are only occasionally examined. Both of these subjects were discussed by the Author in his recently-published work, "The Languages of West Africa," and a repetition seemed somewhat unnecessary. The same observation applies to the native script, which is Arabic slightly modified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appendix to the Dictionary of the Hausa Language (Published 1876): Hausa-English Part, With Additions of Hausa Literature The author regrets that serious illness has prevented him from giving this Appendix all the attention he desii'ed; and that its publication has been delayed from the same cause. He is, however, much cheered by the fact that the study of the Hausa language is now not only encouraged, but is about to be made compulsory among the officers commanding the Hausa Corps at the Gold Coast and at Lagos. Book The Hausa Language

Download or read book The Hausa Language written by Paul Newman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive grammar of Hausa, one of the largest and most important languages of Africa. Hausa is spoken by some 35 million people as a first language and approximately 15 million more as a second language. Paul Newman, a world authority on the Hausa language, draws on two centuries of Hausa linguistic scholarship to provide the most authoritative and detailed grammar of the language ever written. Unlike other grammars, this book is organised alphabetically. Readers will appreciate the ease with which they can find the specific individual topics that interest them. The grammar covers such expected topics as tonology, noun plurals, and verbal tense/aspect as well as often neglected topics, including verbal idioms, proper names, and language games. Newman also incorporates historical linguistic notes that explain and explicate current Hausa phenomena, especially puzzling anomalies, in terms of their Chadic and Afroasiatic origins.

Book Hausa Notes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hausa Notes Classic Reprint written by Walter Richard Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hausa Notes In heartily recommending this little work, alike to the student of Hausa, and to the European (official or otherwise) who may find his lot cast in Nigeria for a greater or less period, I cannot claim to speak as an expert myself in the language. After a very careful study of these Notes, however, I can testify to their value as an aid in acquiring a correct appreciation of the idiom of Hausa, the more so as being myself deeply interested in its structure and a student in some small degree of other African and Asiatic tongues. Dr. Cargill - himself fairly proficient in the language, - writes to me as follows: "In the first place this work is entirely original; no previous English work has been consulted; educated Hausas are Dr. Miller's sole authorities. And secondly he has elucidated points of grammar, which had passed entirely unnoticed by previous authors. This book is in short an independent, lucid, and masterly analysis of the Hausa language. I go so far as to assert that the average man, who is unblessed with the gift of original analysis, cannot hope to acquire even a moderate knowledge of Hausa, unless he masters this little work. I arose from the perusal of Hausa Notes with a feeling of personal gratitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
