This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Dialect of Adlington, Lancashire The present work is an attempt to construct a dia lect grammar on a sound scientific plan. The general scheme of the work is modelled on Professor Wright's Grammar of the Windfall Dialect, but I have treated the subject with Middle English and not Old English as a starting point. In this way I hope greater unity has been secured in tracing the development of the sounds as spoken in the dialect at the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Lancashire Dialect N these prefatory remarks it is not intended to do more than indicate, as briefly as possible, the general scope of the Glossary, and to Offer such observations as seem absolutely neces sary for the due comprehension of the plan pursued. The portion now published will amount, it is estimated, to rather more than a third of the Glossary proper. On its completion, the words them selves will be reprinted - apart from the meanings, notes, and illustrations - accompanied by a representation of the pronuncia tion according to the Glossic system of Mr. A. J. Ellis. This will be followed by a General Introduction, embodying remarks on the grammatical structure and peculiarities of the dialect, and on the variations of idiom and pronunciation as observable in the several districts of the county. It is proposed also to include, in this section of the work, an essay on the capabilities of the dialect and a bibliographical survey of its literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Homeric Dialect The last chapter contains a discussion of the Metre of Homer (chapter XIV), and of some points of 'phonology' which (for us at least) are ultimately metrical questions. Chief among these is the famous question of the Digamma. I have endeavoured to state the main issues which have been raised on this subject as fully as possible: but without much hope of bringing them to a satisfactory decision. Book A Grammar of the New Testament Dialect Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Grammar of the New Testament Dialect Classic Reprint written by Moses Stuart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the New Testament Dialect Whoever will compare the present with the former edition of this work, will find the changes to be more numerous than could be well recounted. I would hope that they are for the better; but of this others must judge. A meagre skeleton of New Testament Grammar would not correspond viith my views of utility, although I am aware that there 18 a class of read ers who desire such a work. But the demands of sacred philology cannot be answered in this way, whoever may attempt so to satisfy them. Begin ners and hasty readers may complain, perhaps, of the copiousness of the present work; but those who are seriously bent upon the acquisition of a more enlarged knowledge of the New Testament idiom, will be the last to complain of its copiousness. Winer has occupied much more room with Syntax alone, than I have taken up with the whole compass of grammar. I do not complain of this in him; but I may repel criticism in respect to this subject which is not well grounded, by appeal to distinguished examples of much greater copiousness than my own. Of the importance of a New Testament Grammar for the purposes of sa cred criticism, it does not seem necessary to say any thing, at the present time. It 18 an encouraging circumstance, that our country is beginning to appreciate this subject In some degree as it deserves to be appreciated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the New Testament Dialect The reader may be assured', that he will find Greek grammar exhibited here according to the stand which this science has most recently taken, under the guidance of the great masters named above. The doctrine of the Greek tenses he will find very different, in some respects, from the representation of it in the old grammars. This difference has, as yet, been but partially recognized in any of our American grammars. The reader will not, I trust, deem every thing of course to be strange or unfounded, that he may find to be new to him.
