Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Fulfulde - English Dictionary is forward - thinking in its intended mission in somewhat noting of dialectal differences as this may be helpful to a wider area and more useful to users. Considerable revisions to the entries have been made to this edition, similarly a lot of alterations to the cross references. Efforts also have been made in order to incorporate at large some vocabularies not included in the first edition for the benefit of students of the language and researchers therein. People and other books also were consulted. Among the books consulted there are Encyclopaedia Britannica, Chambers Dictionaries, Oxford English Dictionary and Hausa - English Dictionary by Rev. G. P. Bargery, O.U.P. 1934 and 1951. Compared with the first edition, many thousands of entries are included aiming at a future comprehensive Fulfulde Dictionary.

Book Aspects of the Morphology syntax Interface in Four Nigerian Languages

Download or read book Aspects of the Morphology syntax Interface in Four Nigerian Languages written by Gerald Heusing and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to blend the rigorous description of four Nigerian languages with theoretical insights. Four main tasks are involved. First, constructions involving the interface of morphology and syntax in the four languages are presented with regard to the syntax of substantives and functional categories, the morphology of functional heads and the relation between functional heads and the syntactic level of language. Secondly, these constructions are described and analysed within the framework of the Principles and Parameters Theory. Thirdly, those theoretical approaches within the Principles and Parameters Theory that can serve as tools for the analysis of the four languages are refined and modified, thereby establishing a version of the theory which may also serve for the morpho-syntactic analysis of related languages. Finally the syntactic model of functional categories is combined with a strictly morpho-semantic model of functional categories.

Book Bibliography of Nigeria

Download or read book Bibliography of Nigeria written by Nduntuei O. Ita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971, this major bibliography devoted to Africa’s most populous country – Nigeria – is therefore a timely contribution which must be welcomed by all. The Bibliography of Nigeria contains over 5,400 entries in archaeology, all branches of anthropology, linguistic and relevant historical and sociological studies. Many of the entries carry indicative or informative annotations which have greatly enhanced the usefulness of the work. The history and culture of Africa constitutes a rich area of study and research which is attracting an ever-increasing number of scholars the world over. The new impetus which African studies is receiving in the major centre of learning today has added urgency to the long-neglected problem of bibliographical control of the vast literature. The dearth of bibliographies in the field of African studies has been a main source of frustration to all those working in this area. The book is divided into two parts: part one deals with Nigeria as a whole, and lists general works or those concerned with several regions or several ethnic groups. Part two is devoted to the various ethnic groups. An analytical table of contents, a comprehensive ethnic index, an author index and an index of Islamic studies, together with generous cross-referencing, ensure ready and easy location of individual entries.

Book Fula spoken in the City of Maroua Northern Cameroon

Download or read book Fula spoken in the City of Maroua Northern Cameroon written by Jean Pierre Boutché and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung This book investigates the speech of non-ethnic Fulfulde speakers in Maroua, Northern Cameroon, focussed on the Christian community, where the language is adopted as evangelistic instrument beside French. Three key reasons motivate our investigation. First: Context - Fulfulde is embedded in a multilingual contact situation with Indo-European languages (French, English) and many other local languages belonging to Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan and Niger-Congo phyla. Second: Fulfulde as lingua franca in the region. This status is unique compared to the situation in other countries such as Senegal, Chad or Sudan where it is mainly an intraethnic medium of communication. Third: In contrast to the common perception of Fulfulde as the language of a Muslim community - here we are targeting the Christian Fulfulde speakers who share the language as well as the Bible (translated into Fulfulde) as common goods for interethnic communication in their religious activities.

Book The polyfunctionality of still expressions

Download or read book The polyfunctionality of still expressions written by Bastian Persohn and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expressions from the semasiological domain of phasal polarity (ʻstillʼ, ʻalreadyʼ, etc.) tend to be highly polyfunctional, with their various uses often extending into a wide range of other linguistic domains, both time-related and non-temporal. Yet these patterns have hitherto been investigated mostly for individual languages or smaller groups. This volume presents the first ever larger-scale survey of the numerous functions of expressions whose meanings include the notion of ʻstill’, making use of a global sample of 76 varieties from 45 distinct phyla. It is aimed at semanticists, typologists and descriptive grammarians alike.

Book Constraints on Pulaar Phonology

Download or read book Constraints on Pulaar Phonology written by Mamadou Ousmane Niang and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraints in Pulaar Phonology provides clear and convincing analyses and solutions to linguistic phenomena whose treatment in the literature remained unsatisfactory until now. An analysis of the metrical structure and other morphological and phonological processes in Pulaar shows the need for further distinctions beyond the generally admitted binary ones. The argument is supported by various processes that obtain in Pulaar, a dialect of Fula, a language of the West Atlantic Branch of the Niger Congo Language Family. The analyses adopted show Pulaar not only breaks this binary distinction but also makes a four way weight distinction in contrast to other views according to which only a two way weight distinction prevails in languages. The analysis of the metrical system of Pulaar shows that stress assignment is sensitive to the "sonority" hierarchy of the syllables in the word. Four sonority levels (CV

Book Prosodic Weight

Download or read book Prosodic Weight written by Kevin M. Ryan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the most comprehensive treatment of phonological weight to date, bringing together traditional notions of categorical, rime-based weight and new developments in statistical prosodic phonology. The book demonstrates that while some systems treat weight as a simple (heavy vs. light) distinction, others treat it as a rich continuum of heaviness. Following an introduction to weight-sensitive systems in phonology, Kevin Ryan explores the range of phenomena that interact with prosodic weight. Chapters examine the analysis of scales in terms of prominence rather than moraic coercion; prosodic minimality in the context of larger prosodic constituents; syllable weight in metrics; and the relationship between prosodic end-weight and stress. Throughout, the analysis is based on a survey of weight systems both within and across the world's languages, which yields a number of valuable generalizations and points towards a universal theory of weight in human language.
